Uncertainty, debate, anticipation, even disagreement. All these things make the game what it is.
Horses have personalities. Also varying degrees of intelligence. I have never believed they are just dumb animals born to run.
One of my favorite things at the track is after the race when the jockeys dismount. One horse gets to go get his picture taken with a bunch of happy people. The rest get to hear their jockey explain what happened, then they are walked back to the barn with the other also rans. The winning horse usually is walked back by himself.
Opening night at Churchill my noob friends were sitting and a few minutes after the race the winning horse was walked right past us. They said "what horse is that?" I said "the winner!" And they yelled congratulations. Point is the horse looked like any other. Probably just wanted to go and eat! Question is "did he know he just won?"
