Yes please, English or Japanese is fine, although if it's in English you'll need to explain it in Japanese.

Thanks,

Luke

I'm ridiculously late on this one but I've just brought Plan B's album - The Defamation of Strickland Banks and amazed how good it is. Not sure if his success has spread across to the US (he's a London based rapper who has blown everyone away with this soul album) but I'd definitely recomend checking it out.

hey kil,

just a note about translation companies etc. from my experience with chinese translation companies, the market is really inundated with small startup companies so the competition between them is ridiculously fierce. as a result, the pay isn't very good, and it's hard for most companies to get consistent contracts. no idea if japanese translation is similar... just wanted to share my experience with them

So finally finished season 2 of the wire last night after taking a month off from it.

So far today I'm already through 6 episodes of season 3.

I have a problem.

obv i'm no expert and the japanese authorities have recently invoked some obscure rule that requires all lower officials to stay silent on the matter, so there is less info available atm, but I have been reading a lot about this story since friday. apparently after the quake they were able to shut down the reactors so they are no longer active. the problem is that it takes incredible amounts of time for the fuel to cool after it is shut off and it must be submerged in water/coolant at all times. the problem came about when they couldn't pump coolant/water into the reactors after the tsunami because the backup power generators were not functioning correctly. they also store what is called "spent fuel" at the site, which is I guess already used up nuclear fuel. this spent fuel requires incredible amounts of time to cool as well. the recent problem with the radiation from what I have read has occured because the water/coolant covering the spent fuel reached too low of a level and the spent fuel was exposed to the air, which allowed the radiation to escape into the atmosphere. when the spent fuel is exposed it also reheats and this has been the source of the fires. obv it's all speculative and impossible to know because the true facts are not available, but many people I have read say that the risk of meltdown is still relatively low since the reactors have been shut off and the metal casing is still mostly surrounding the nuclear fuel. the radiation should subside once (if?) they are able to recover the fuel with seawater and restart the cooling process.

I also read a bit about chernobyl today and apparently that was way worse than this disaster. at chernobyl they ****ed up so hard that the reactor completely exploded and like 30+ tons of nuclear material was spewed into the atmosphere. they didn't even really fix it that well. they just build a concrete tomb to house the destroyed reactor and evacuated a 30km radius of the area. the article I read said that people can not inhabit that place and grow crops for probably another 20,000 yrs. so wild.

You are right you can not really compare chernobyl and fukushima.
chernobyl got supercritical due to some human errors, exploded
and to make things even worse, the moderator graphite startet
to burn and blasted further radioactive material into the atmosphere.

In fukushima the reactors were shut down after the earth quake, so there is
actually no spallation reaction going on since friday.
The problem is that there are still radioactive spallation products in the fuel
rods, that produce heat. After a few days the remaining heat that is produced is in the order of 0.1-1% (depending on the exact fuel composition),
so in case of fukushima that should still be around 2MW-20MW, which is enough to melt the fuel rods if they are not properly cooled.

In fact i think that nobody in the world can really say what is happening when
fuel rods melt down completely. If the japanes are lucky you have maybe
only a strong local contanimation around fukushima and the rest gets blown
into the ocean, but a huge contamination of tokyo is definately possible.

yeah, but I think there are less fluent english speakers that speak japanese than fluent english speakers that speak chinese...

not sure it matters though

If they melt down thats a huge ****ing problem, in many ways

And if they melt down into the ocean tokyo would not be the biggest problem. They would contaminate all the fish for a very large area, they would affect china, and it would get into the rain, making it unlivable for a very large area. Agricultural in that entire area would be ****ed, and no one could live there.

And unlike a country like America or Russia, Japan is so ****ing small that it hurts a lot

btw america is finally using unmanned machines to get **** down

Well once it is in the ocean i doubt that much of the radioactive elements
get back into the rain, cause the elements are quite heavy. But the fish
in a large area would definately be contaminated, which would be a huge problem for japan and all other asian countries.
And in case of a melt down that gets through the reactor containment, the
biggest problem would probably be that ground water gets contaminated
and thus the soil over a large area.

So no matter what exactly happens ,the situation seems quite severe,
and i really hope that they find a way too cool the fuel rods, but right
now it looks like the engineers have completely lost the control. And once
the contimation at reactor gets too high i can't imagine that you can do
anything at all, cause you dont have any chance to get near the reactor or the cooling system.

I was kinda talking about the fact that the **** melts down, gets into the ground and gets into underground water which leads to rainwater

A question to all you med students, what questions can i ask when making a subjective assessment of someone with a respiratory problem? They have history of atelectasis and are now short of breath.

These have been some good posts. It's hard to get actual useful information on this, the media just report, they aren't good at overviews.

As a thank you for your early support, I've flagged your Battle.net account to receive a free, downloadable copy of World of Warcraft. This is the full version of World of Warcraft that we sell in store and includes a 30-day subscription. Just follow the instructions below to activate it, download the game, and start playing. Again, it's totally free.
Grr, they're trying to get me addicted

On the Dutch news they mentioned it looked like Japan was 'sacrificing' a team of 50 engineers to try and stop the meltdown. Apparently those people work now in the dangerous area, for the greater good.

Respect.

do you smoke?
can you walk up a flight of stairs without getting out of breath?
is it constant or with exertion?
any pain with breathing?
when did it start? has it gotten worse since then?
do you prop yourself up with pillows to sleep?
family history of emphysema?
other health problems?

whatever. my friend posted " If the Japanese think they have it bad now, wait until Godzilla wakes up" on the day of the quake.

...we are rednecks.

yea after I read that article last night about them giving up for a little bit, I thought "wtf? why aren't they using robots to fix this?" we have badass robots that can travel through space and explore Mars, but we don't have robots that can work in highly radioactive areas to stop a nuclear meltdown? talk about priorities...

lol and the last thing we need is a nuclear godzirra showing up. would be pretty epic though.
03-16-2011 , 08:27 PM
guys, my youtube has been acting up...whenever i click on a video, it doesn't load. it says the page is 'done' as well and refreshing does nothing. any ideas?

yeah, you say that, but Im the one living in Japan.

if a nuclear godzilla shows up Im gonna be on the front lines though

Try a different browser, if you don't use chrome I recommend it. If you use chrome, try firefox.

More accurate godzilla? Who cares, more godzilla the merrier, so say us non japos.
