I was in a 7+.50 tournament earlier today and came across a hand I need some clarity on.

Limp pot - blinds 500/1000 with antes around 200.

Starting stacks:
MP - 3700
VILLAIN Btn- 7500
HERO Sb - 4500
BB - 8100

(starting stack sizes and blinds are accurate to the best I could recall)

MP limps, Villain Limps, hero completes and BB checks. Pot on the flop was just over my starting stack size around 4800.

Flop : 4 2 3
Hero hand: 5 2

I elected to shove to protect my hand thinking everybody would put those low cards in my range and fold with anything less than the nuts. Worst case I had a pair with a strong draw.

Villain called with: A 5

I didn't improve and was knocked out. I just can't see how I check there or worse give up on the hand with so many outs to any overpair or even 4x3x.

Thoughts?

You shouldn't have a completing range in SB for 4.5 bb there. Either shove or fold. Probably a fold when MP and CO limp, but need some more info on the payout structure.

I finished just under 20th. Payout was final table.

500 to see around 4000 seems like a good price though.

Fold pre flop! As played shove is fine.

why on earth would we only shove or fold pre? you guys never call getting an insane price for only 1/9th of our stack against wide/weak ranges? at a $7.50 tournament their ranges will be even wider & this advice seems even more questionable to me. 10-1 guys, jesus.

i don't know if completing with THIS hand is good. most of the time you'll have to just decide whether or not you want to jam a bare bottom pair or a ****ty fd into 3 other players who probably don't like to fold given it's a $7.50 tourney (no offense), so i could see folding pre but, man, your odds are so good and unless you think the limpers have strong ranges i don't think you can fold pre. flop jam is certainly the best play.

We have 4.5bb and the other two players who limped with <10bb are going to have pretty strong ranges (usually)

Calling of over 10% of our stack to play a disconnected 5 high out of position seems like a poor decision...

Depending on the limpers limp-fold stats and tendencies you can shove any two or shove x% that will retain equity when called.

There's absolutely no room for manoeuvre post flop when playing less than 10bb. Which is why you play push/fold poker.
