I agree with your statement, but I can't find any better alternate lines than stephen's line once he bets.
I guess if villain is tough and will put a ton of pressure on you, checking flop might be good, since "we never have it" when we check back.
The main plus for just calling the raise is villain is more likely to be crushed when he has the betting leading.
Folding is an option, but for every situation where we are in bad shape, I can counter with a situation where we are in good shape.
