Ya several people have already explained that. I haven't traveled too much outside of California.

As long as it's cheap and safe, I'm willing to consider it.

If I lived in a city that had great quality of living and cheap housing, I sure as hell wouldn't want to decrease the quality of living and increase the price of housing by advertising it to the whole world as a desirable location.

1st "house" isn't too bad but the last 2 are horrible.

The bedrooms in the last 2 have to be about 10x10.

A 1000 sq ft home is small.

Home prices aren't bad here, but you're not finding a decent house in a good area for under $100K.

Anybody have an opinion about North Carolina? I know nothing about it but I know it's pretty cheap.
Its hard to generalize NC I know of the eastern half of it you have beaches at obx but houses cost more than 100k,you have decent houses at 100k ish in NC a lot of country living down there nice people for the most part.Prices are pretty low sometimes work can be hard to find there and people from nothern part of NC commute to VA for work.Gotta sweat ducking hurricanes every year btw if you like the outdoors this might be a good place for you.The western part of the state I dunno much about.

Any of those four would be a significant upgrade from the glorified closet I'm paying $1,500 a month for right now.

Conway Sc if you need a home. You can buy a really nice 2 bedroom condo on a golf course in neighboring myrtle beach for 70k no problem, 80 golf courses , awesome beach and crime is not an issue. Myrtle Beach is a mixed population of rednecks and yankees who didnt quite make it to Florida. Not too much bilble thumping with 11 strip clubs. Really low cost of living GL

I'd look into Missouri. Columbia (in the middle of the state) is probably going to be above 100k, but maybe one of the smaller towns around there might fit the bill. The minimum 20k people requirement/bible thumping element might be your biggest problem. Another option would be in the Kansas City suburbs in either Kansas or Missouri. The St. Louis suburbs would be more than 100k but houses there are still pretty damn cheap.

Myrtle Beach also looks promising. I had never considered South Carolina but it seems to have a nice mix of the things I'm looking for, based on Wikipedia and Googling.

You could be a snowbird. Nice house in upstate NY or Maine or something and travel/motorhome for winter.

Maybe at 150k. At 250k, you could live almost anywhere outside of the extremely overpriced cities.

Cool thanks. Watching a bunch of youtube videos about it now. Myrtle Beach seems great. It has a bunch of the perks I didn't bother adding to the requirements because I didn't think you could get them anywhere in the US for this price range.

This is definitely on my list of places to visit and test drive now for sure.

Real estate prices are probably a bit higher but have a look at Grand Junction Colorado. I would think you could get in the market for <150,000

Why not buy a decent used RV and find reasonably priced parks to travel to?

I'm looking for a long term home not just to perpetually travel. But that sounds like an interesting idea for how to find my new home. I was thinking about a road trip across the US and stopping in 10+ cities along the way, but living out of hotels would suck. Doing it that way for a month or two would probably be a lot of fun.
