your ignorance is showing on this one.

how can you say it's obvious? do you know anything about the chances of life starting up? do you know anything about the size of the universe? do you know anything about the number of habitable planets? no, you don't. nobody does. all we have are guesses that might not even be that good.

it's quite possible that the chances of life arising are sufficiently small and the number of habitable planets not large enough to make the chances of life existing elsewhere 0%.

it's also possible that life exists somewhere out there.

to say that it's super obvious because like uhh.. the universe is so huge man.. is stupid.

i wouldn't say i don't think there is intelligent life anywhere else in the universe.

There is a lot better word than "obvious" to say what you people are trying to say. Several actually.

I meant likely. Saying there's life on other planets because the universe is so huge isn't stupid though.

The Universe is like 13.8 Billion light-years in diameter. I think it's prett eclair that there is probably life somewhere out there.

this is exactly the kind of ignorance i am talking about. you casually make such a statement with NO IDEA WHATSOEVER what the chances are of intelligent life popping up on a planet somewhere.

do you realize that it doesn't matter how big the universe is? let's pretend i can somehow control the probability of intelligent life popping up. do you realize that no matter how large the universe is, i can always make the chances of life arising sufficiently small enough to make the effective probability of life existing 0%?

in case you're joking (eclair) this post is for the "how is this even a question" guy too.

Uh, but do you know how big a light-year is? How about a billion? Okay, now put them together. And then multiply by 13!

Daryn, you're religious, I get it. Nobody knows what's out there. This is a stupid thing to get worked up over.

Intelligent life formed here so it should be obvious that the probability is above 0.

Now we live on one planet orbiting one star. There are over 200 billion stars in our galaxy, and over 100 billion other galaxies each with a similar number of stars.

You really believe that ours is the only planet that life was able to form on?

Thinking that hey, we exist, ergo the probability must be high enough that tons of other plants have life is such an obvious case of selection bias. You simply don't know what the probabilities are to make such a statement, and you need more proof than boy, we're here and there are a lot of stars and planets out there.

I think it would be hilarious if they discovered there were fish or something on the moon. All the doubters would be like, "Well there's probably no MORE life in the universe."

give the probability of life existing on a planet something stupid like 0.0000000000001%

given this what are the chances life exists elsewhere in the universe?

i'm more inclined to believe life exists elsewhere than to believe the chance of life existing is sooooo small that it doesn't exist elsewhere.

no need for an argument. people can think what they want. that is just my belief.

Why would the chance of it happening once (confirmed) be any different from >1 given the size? Note I don't know what I'm talking about but it seems trivial that we should accept this without knowing any underlying probabilities since there are incalculable number of bodies in the universe which could have life.
