Ido , maybe the fact that being the highest grossing movie of all time means people went in droves to watch it, many of them multiple times. The same thing applies to television, highest rating means something - means generally speaking its one of the better shows on tv. The whole ratings / Highest grossing film argument doesn't mean anything tilts the **** out of me. Fine you don't like titanic and dont think its one of the best movies of all time. That doesn't change the fact that 95 percent of the population disagrees with you. What makes the opinion of the minority so important. The best movies and shows of all time are the one that people come in droves to watch, not the ones you personally feel are great.

Dids, I think the point is that the framing story at the beginning and end of the movie makes no sense if the Titanic wasn't real. So just seeing the movie should have taught you. And if not, everything written or spoken about it references the accuracy to history.

Clare, I don't want to get into it, but it's a brilliantly directed film. Most of the acting is great too, and if you can overlook some of the dialogue, it's clear how well crafted a piece of entertainment it is. Production wise, it's the opposite of shlock.

It has been 10 plus years since I have seen it, but I remember actual pictures of the titanic and of the expedition - hard for me to believe you could watch the movie and not know an actual shipped named titanic sunk 100 years ago....... But it is hard to be surprised at anything honestly, I could ask 10 people off the street the name of the vice president and a few would get that wrong

I doubt those kids actually saw the movie though. I'm just saying that I think it's easier than people realize to be unaware of things that are really only passed down as pop culture artifacts and never taught in school. These are 15 year olds who just know there's a movie about a ship sinking. They're not reading 10 year old critical discourse about it or anything.

I have never seen it myself, because it's not the type of movie that interests me in the least- but the people I know that I trust and do enjoy that sort of thing seem to suggest it's well executed for what it is.

I sure don't assume every romance set against some fancy backdrop was real, nor do I give it much thought at all.
I think we might have covered it when discussing the Lusitania.

I thought Avatar was the highest grossing movie of all time?

I did see Avatar and it sure as hell sucked. Same director... coincidence? I think not.

Not saying Cameron can't put together a good film. He has and I've enjoyed a lot of them.

But having said that, I kinda imagine Titanic to be like Avatar, but on a boat. Do not want.
