They're on the bottom because the guy making burgers reads the tickets, sees how many burgers he has to put out for the order and toppings on the bun first makes it easier to organize the order.

Ticket 1:
2- Cheeseburgers w/ everything

Ticket 2:
1- Cheeseburger, lettuce/tomato only

Ticket 3:
1- Cheeseburger, ketchup/pickle
1- Cheeseburger, everything
1- Cheeseburger plain

The cook throws 6 burgers on the grill. While they are cooking, he assembles in a line 6 buns with the appropriate toppings on each. When the burgers get done, throw them on the sandwich and wrap it/plate it and it goes out to the server/cashier. It's how most restaurants (not fast food) train their cooks to build a burger.

Just went to a news site and as soon as the page loaded I got a pop-up asking me if I wanted to sign up for the site for free before reading the page (signing up was not necessary to view the page).

The options I was able to choose from were:

"Yes, I'll sign up!"
"No, I'll stay out of the loop"

It pisses me off because they'd only do this if they knew that some percentage of people who don't want to sign up for the site will read the options and think "well, I don't want to stay out of the loop!". I guess it is those people who piss me off

It's one of those "we always did it that way so that's the way it is" type of deals. Major Corporate Fast Food chains put the toppings on the top and it seems like mostly everywhere else seems to do the veggies on the bottom.

Toppings are best when split between top and bottom.
Lettuce/tomato/onions go below the meat
Cheese/bacon/mushrooms/chili/fried egg go above the meat.

Now im a bit pissed off that I wrote the bottom toppings on top, and the top toppings on bottom. But not enough to rewrite it.

Onions clearly go on top of meat.
