well to be fair they initially offered me 3 months but i negotiated it up because they had poached me from another job and I was able to negotiate that I'd lost out on stock options to join this one

this is why my salary got "too high" in the first place, they kept on calling me and i kept on saying no, I finally told them look, I'm not leaving unless it's at least x amount and a few days later they called me up and offered me 25% more

seems they had to fill a very niche role in order to satisfy a client who was visiting the office and they just panicked to get it done for fear of losing the contract and then once contract was secure it was back to who tf is this guy and why are we paying him that

in hindsight i should have put it away and invested most of it, instead i just went travelling for a very long time - but that too was nice

It's a cordial way to as they say "council someone out" who they don't but want anymore and the easiest thing to do is to let the money do the talking.

I was listening to a podcast earlier and several times the host mentioned someone in the following fashion:

“The group was led by a woman called Patricia.”
“My high school friend was called Steve.”

The part that catches my ear (and bugs me) is using the word “called” rather than “named.” To my mind, she’s not called Patricia, she’s named Patricia. Using “called” would be appropriate for a nickname, e.g. “The star of the team was called Stretch.

I come across this a lot and I think most people don’t even notice it.
Isn't that a British English thing? Seems as if I remember noticing it on the old BBC Top Gear program, where they'd make a reference like, "...and he was called Enzo Ferrari..."

Even though I noticed it, did not piss me off. So, good one.

Is 'called' actually grammatically wrong? I'd pretty much always use 'called' in that situation as 'named' sounds a little bit too formal to me.

Yeah I'd always say 'called' too. Also UK.

It's a good thing my parents named me John.

That's what everyone calls me.

Called is more correct. Only your parents named you but everyone calls you by your name.

In USA#1 nobody actually says "I am called xxxx" nor do we say "I am named xxxx"

We either say "my name is xxxx" or we say "I'm xxxx".

You people talk weird in your uncivili"s"ed countries

Just to clarify my post about “called” vs. “named,” I am talking about a very specific usage. Here is an example:

“In my first job, I worked with a guy called Larry.”

It's like the "waiting on line" thing. It sounds absolutely wrong to my ears, but different strokes I guess.

You know Larry? Nice guy, but really incompetent at work. Tell him I said hi if you're still in touch.
