This is one of those pieces of received wisdom that I question the reliability of or evidence for. Rick Barry is #3 on the all time FT% list, but Mark Price and Steve Nash are in front of him and they do not shoot granny-style. Why do we take the word of the #3 guy on the list that his way is the right way? Furthermore, the world record holder for FTs made in a row--Ted St. Martin, who hit 5,221 in a row, and runs clinics around the country--shoots overhand.
Has it actually been shown, biomechanically, that shooting underhand is superior? It seems to me that shooting it the way you always shoot the basketball would generally be preferable, leaving aside how goofy shooting it underhand looks. Just seems like apocryphal bs /FT derail
