Lol. And what do you think happens when you rear end someone going 40-50 mph? Do you think that car just goes straight or something with the driver in front fighting for control (assuming he hasnt been knocked unconscious from hitting the steering wheel?)

I'm certainly aware of the increased chances of an accident tail gating obviously, but doing something unexpected like break checking is much worse and likely to result in a horrible accident.

I'd say the circumstances that result in an absolutely disastrous accident from tail gating are pretty slim. Both cars would be going close to the same speed and you would obviously be aware there is an idiot on your tail so you are naturally on alert to react should something happen. Not to mention many times people aren't even truly tail gating just following at a distance that the other driver deems too close when they fly into a rage.

I guess to me there is far more dangerous things people do driving that are deserving of rage than tail gating such as merging at a speed below the flow of traffic.

To allow for proper braking, you're supposed to allow 1 car length for each 10 mph you're driving. If someone is driving 60 mph, and they look like they're tailgating, they are. They're well inside a safe braking area. Part of why people put cushions between cars in front of them is so that they can do evasive maneuvers if necessary.

Yes, break checking is also stupid. But you said in your other post that you don't understand why people get upset when people tailgate them. It seems pretty obvious why they may get upset. It is a fallacy of relative privation to say that since there are worse ways to get into an accident therefore people shouldn't get mad about tailgating. Murder is worse, therefore we shouldn't get mad about petty theft. Same logic.

I remember my sociology prof talking about purposely doing the speed limit to see what other peoples reactions would be. He ended up getting honked at a bunch and given the finger several times. If youre doing the speed limit and youre in the passing lane im sorry but someone tailing u is telling u to get out the way.

If youre driving already fast and getting tailed then thats another story. Reason i dont have a problem with being tailed is because i have no problem with switching to the right lane and thrn back to the left when someone wants to travel faster than i would like. If im doing 130kmh in the left lane and someone is traveling 160 ill switch to the rifht then back to the left. Or speed up to give them space to weave.

Tailing isnt that big of a deal if u handle it correctly.

If you're not passing in the passing lane you are driving poorly. If you are tailgating someone going slow in the passing lane you are driving poorly.

You are right! In Colorado, it allows you to clearly read their "I Assault Weapons" bumper sticker.

I bet HF was hanging out in the left lane for no reason just wondering why they aren't passing on the right too.

People putting on their brakes unnecessarily is one of the most iritating things on the road.

1 car length for each 10 mph your driving? I haven't heard of that one - basically it is a 2 second rule. Watch the car in front drive past a marker and count 'one one thousandth, two one thousandth' and see if you go by that marker within that time to ascertain whether you are driving too close.

Personally I give the car in front no more than 2 car lengths. Probably 1 and a half if they aren't doing the speed limit or they are in the right lane doing the speed limit.

1/10 mph is what they taught in drivers ed. Counting to 2 doesn't tell you if you're too close or not at all since the required breaking distance varies with speed.

Yeah but so does the distance travelled per 2 seconds. Not saying it is the proper method, but it does appear to take into account speed.

I'm the same way. When I get pissed I cuss loudly and get over it like a normal person.

OP. Can you please acknowledge the fact that we all think you are a giant douchenozzle and a moronic bad driver? It's tilting the **** out of me that you are just ignoring the elephant in the room while posting on the petty trivialities.

OP's reaction was absurd but 2p2 is not the place to ask about driving speeds and proper passing lane etiquette and expect a reasonable response either -- reading the responses made me slightly more sympathetic to OP's position.

Break checking is no better and probably even worse than tailgating (in terms of danger). Do you have an extremely sucky life that you feel the need to take out your frustration on someone driving behind you ? Jfc learn about having some self control. If someone is tailgating you for longer than a minute, odds are you are a bad driver.

Don't do this. Tailgating to intimidate someone into changing lanes is much worse behavior than someone going slower than you want them to go.

I just ease off the accelerator and drive even slower than usual when someone tailgates me in the slow lane. Usually they get frustrated and pass. Brake-checking is moronic.
