VR,

Of course. But I believe the current understanding is that the historical referent behind the team -- the Celtic tribes in the UK -- should be pronounced with the hard C, as in "Kel-tics." Thus, for 27 to maintain intellectual consistency, he ought to do the same with respect to his home-town team. Admittedly the historical referents run far further back than our bastardization of -shetta to 'ketta, but the macroscopic point remains the same.

Having grown up mostly around Los Angeles, I used to hate the Celtics -- especially during college, when I lived in Boston. But no more. There is something about old rivals that softens with time, and my own feeling towards them has shifted from outright hate to grudging admiration to mild affection.

Your Friend,

HT

If I ever soften in my hatred of the Washington Huskies, I demand that someone violently kneecap me.

Noted and logged, sir. Do you generally avoid purple and gold clothing?

I’m pretty fond of wearing purple business shirts and ties. Of course, that’s the light purple that you wouldn’t really see on their gear.

I got where you were going, but fortunately I don't require consistency of myself. I used to say brushetta, and I don't know when or where I was corrected but now I couldn't say it differently if I tried.

Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, with apologies to Mr. Emerson for using his eloquence to justify my pronunciation of a basketball team.

VR,
Howard is going to agree with your general stance and talk about a podcast episode.
07-18-2020 , 11:29 AM
That probably should have been a PM.

Pure consistency is of course impossible to attain, and while that idea certainly did not originate with me, I didn't get it from a podcast. But that's no excuse for intellectual laziness, and we should IMO be consistent to the extent we can. But I too refuse to suffer the social embarrassment I'd certainly receive if I went around a) pronouncing it "Kel-tics" and, worse, b) purporting to correct people who pronounce it "Sel-tics."

I'm quite sure 27 fully understood I wasn't seriously suggesting he hew to pure historical accuracy.

I remember thinking that Bridesmaids was really good.

Unfortunately, upon rewatch I'm discovering a significant number of bathroom jokes.

My sushi buddy says ni-jeer-ee every time we go. I told him once it was ni-gear-ee, but he still says -jeer-ee.

If he wants to sound linke a moran, that's his prerogative. It's the way that he wants to live.

Lol. You guys going to start pronouncing Caesar “correctly” as well? Yes, it’s a hard K sound too (see: kaiser).

He also famously said (phonetically), “Weeny, weedy, weeky!” (Veni, vidi, vici)

Doesn’t really have the same gravitas, does it?
07-18-2020 , 02:11 PM
I thought everyone pronounced it Kaiser.

Hmmm, I thought it was pronounced with a j sound. Hopefully I haven't said it out loud to many people.

You can’t be serious. Do you call it a “Kaiser Salad?”

Your first sentence is correct, thus negating the question.
07-18-2020 , 02:26 PM
Some folks call it a slingblade, I call it a Caesar blade.

Hiked up Glassford Hill this morning. About 2.4 miles from trailhead to summit. A little under 1,000ft elevation gain to about 6,200ft. First 3/4 mile or so is a steady incline. And then you get to the switchbacks. Took a few pictures at the top. Not the best since I didn't bring my camera and used my phone.

Looking west from the summit at the Sierra Prieta Mtns. Thumb Butte is on the left.

East towards the Mingus Mtn. The San Francisco Peaks (12,000ft) near Flagstaff are visible in the distance - about 70 miles away. If you squint real hard you can see our house in the valley.

Looking down the trail a little ways from the top. The trail winds up the inside of a caldera.
