Go for it. It won't be discounted any time soon.

got my kindle touch in the mail today

first ereader for me

holy crap, how did anybody manage to use one of these without a touchscreen, seems like it would be super frustrating

any suggestions on blogs/websites/etc to check out to see what's worth buying when you get those 'buy one of these 100 books for a buck' offers?

torn between getting the $79 one now or waiting for the touch version. the latter is obviously infinitely better, but god knows when it will be available outside US.

Without a doubt

I can't overstate how intuitive the touch interface is

Also some sort of keyboard seems like a must

And ffs, it's 20 bucks

I've had my Fire for about a week now. Before that I had the regular Kindle 3G for about 18 months. I love my Fire. I just don't think you can go wrong for the price. The screen is decent, it's the perfect size and the battery life is decent (tho not nearly what it was on my old Kindle, OBV). It does seem to take a while to charge. I'm not crazy about that. Also, sometimes I have to repeat the 'turn page' motion on the screen because the next page doesn't snap in place.

I haven't watched much video on it yet but I'm sure I will. I also can't wait for more apps to come out, that's one of the things that sucks right now. Again though, you get a multimedia device for $200. I don't really know how you can go wrong.

review basically saying the non-touch is more responsive and less sluggish than the touch. i dunno if this is the consensus view. anyway i get my touch in the morning, yay.

Somewhat related topic, couldnt turn down the Nook Simple Touch for $79 deal although I already have a 2E basic nook which works great and I love, mostly just for the upgraded battery life and slightly lighter. One thing I didnt realize until I got it home was how DRASTICALLY they have reduced the storage space. Nook 2E was 2GB storage, of which like 1.87 was usable. Nook ST is 2GB storage, of which 1GB is operative system, 750 MB is partitioned ONLY for purchases through nook store, and 250 is available for sideloaded. I mean...ugh. For example, I have a textbook that I have loaded onto my 2E which I use every single day that BY ITSELF is 267MB and so cannot be placed onto the ST. I understand this is freakishly large for a book, it has a ton of pictures and diagrams, but even still, for someone who doesnt purchase a lot through nook store and gets things less conventionally, its something to consider.

The workaround is pretty straightforward, it has a slot for MicroSD, and right now 32GB microSD is $35 with free shipping on Amazon, so it will all be fine.

I've had the original nook about a year and it works just fine, but after playing with the new kindles last night at best buy, I'm sure I'll end up with one soon, probably the touch version

Is the an e-reader that is good for academic PDFs? DX doesn't allow resizing, only zooming which is a PITA, other e-readers seem too small ...

Sorry if this has been posted before but trying to choose between regular and touch. It seems that the regular has better reviews due to the touch being too sensitive and flips pages with any slight touch. So I think I have my mind set on the regular from reading the amazon reviews, but would appreciate it if anyone could give me some more insight into this. Just planning on reading at home and don't need extra features.

Also does anyone have the special offers thing from amazon? Is it annoying or is it worth the discount?

According to Amazon, you can unsubscribe from special offers at any time by paying the difference in price - so you can start out with the subsidized model and upgrade if it proves too annoying.

I have special offers on the kindle touch and it's not a problem at all. The ads don't show up when you're reading, only in a small area at the bottom of the home screen, and when it's in sleep mode. I'd actually rather have the ads than not, just in case a deal comes up on something I want to buy (hasn't happened yet though). But anyway the ads never intrude on the reading experience.

The inadvertent page turn issue could be a slight problem on the touch. I've had it happen a few times, but I think it's outweighed by the convenience of being able to touch a word to get a dictionary definition, and of course it's easier to type in searches on the touch. And if you like to highlight passages or take notes, the touch would be better for that also. But I would prefer having the option to use physical buttons for page turning, so that's a slight drawback.

I've been reading a book in Spanish, which at my level necessitates looking up words frequently, and I figured the touch would be ideal for this because I can get definitions immediately by tapping on the words I don't know. And it works, kind of, but I wish the implementation was better. So first I had to purchase a Spanish/English dictionary and after a brief search I settled on:
Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Translation Dictionary

Is there a better one available (or one that has better integration with the kindle)? It's still a huge improvement over stopping to look up words in a physical dictionary, but it has problems with words that have pronoun endings attached, for example "pronunciarlo". If I select that in the text it will say No Definition Found, even though the dictionary has "pronunciar". Along with a few other issues. It kind of works but just not as smoothly as I'd like.

One interface issue I wish they'd address, and it's been coming up more often for me because I'm constantly looking up words, is that if I select the wrong word by mistake and then slide my finger to the word I want defined, that gets interpreted as if I'm trying to highlight a passage. Which is never what I want to do. I wish there was a checkbox option to enable/disable notes and highlights, because at least in my case I never use notes and highlights and what I want to do instead is look up words. So that and physical page turn buttons (along with a checkbox to enable/disable using the touch screen to turn pages) are the features I'd like to see. Overall still pleased with the purchase though.

And for anyone thinking about getting the lighted case, I recommend it. The kindle touch fits in there really tight, and in fact it's a bitch to remove it, but the good news is there's really no reason to take it out once you have it in there. With the case you still have full access to the power button, headphone jack, and USB port. It does cover up the speakers making them more difficult to hear, but I don't think most people would get much use from the speakers anyway. Even with the case the kindle touch still fits in the front pocket of my jeans (barely), which is nice. I've seen reviews saying the light assembly is flimsy, but it seems fine as far as I can tell. The only real drawback imo is the price. That and the cover doesn't latch shut could be a problem for some people (it stays shut the same way a book cover stays shut, using gravity, but magnets might be an improvement).

Thanks steve that was really helpful. I guess accidental page turns shouldn't be annoying if they don't happen much, and I really like the idea of the dictionary feature.

my original nook died and I'm dismayed that B&N no longer offers a 3G model. I can't decide if I want to pay $150 for the kindle 3G, and if not, if I should go with a new basic kindle or nook.

It looks like the availability of books and pricing between nook and kindle have pretty much evened out.

Anyone have one of the nook touches and can offer any feedback?
