For myself, I pretty much exclusively use the Kindle for reading e-books / Instapaper. But I think this is really case by case.

iPad is not a great reading device for me for 2 reasons:

1) I get slight eyestrain after about an hour and a half straight of reading on iPad
2) Reading iPad in bed keeps me up at night because of the screen backlight (similar to how watching TV or using a laptop in bed might keep someone up - there have been several studies done on this effect)

The sunlight issue is not huge for me because I don't do a ton of reading sitting in a park or the beach - but that's another nice reason to have Kindle vs. iPad imo.

I think if you don't get eyestrain, and iPad is good for you reading in bed... not sure why you would need a Kindle as well.

i mostly read outside or in bed, so i still use my kindle a ton for reading. My ipad has put off the need for a laptop replacement though.

The special offers one is a must buy. The ads are only on at the bottom of the screen when you are in the main menu or when the kindle is off. From saving money on the special offers and selling the codes to the ones I don't use on eBay my kindle has paid for itself and then some.

There are some great upcoming offers which include 20% off laptops and 25% off digital cameras

On the Ipad - my reading experience improved tremendously when I switched to black background / white letters (also like that I can read with the lights off)

Ah, but with a Kindle, if you get the awesome (but crazily overpriced) cover with light, you have the optimal lights off reading experience!

Someone in the iPad thread also mentioned black background / white letters, and it did somewhat improve the reading experience for me, but not enough where I could read for say 2+ hours straight without eyestrain (unfortunately for me).

Kindle vs. iPad (e-reading only) - the other 2 factors I forgot to mention in my above post that give Kindle some advantages are 1) size (more portable) and 2) battery life is amazing of course vs. iPad

Still - I think think as long as you don't have eyestrain / reading at night issues with iPad, unless you are someone who reads alot of books, it's probably not worth buying the extra device.

OK I got the case, and the best comparison I can think of is the $5 shake in Pulp Fiction. It's a pretty damned good case. Not sure if it's worth $60, but it's pretty good.

lol agreed

I love my kindle and I like the case apart from the price. Sometimes I take it out of the case and put the kindle in a pocket and plug in earbuds while I mow the lawn, saw up logs, do the dishes etc. I can't say how much this increases the amount of books I can get through in a given amount of time. I wish I had this my whole life. Staggering to think how much better read I would be.

I pulled the trigger on the $114 version. I already have a slew of pdf books lined up I'm anxious to plow through.

Unfortunately I'm not balla enough to roll prime. Hoping it gets here before the weekend. We so excited!

Took the plunge. Didnt buy the cover (yet).

Seems pretty cool though cant connect to my wifi

Honestly the thing I hated most about books was having to hold them up and keep the pages from turning while youre reading. This seems to have solved that.

Amazon did so good with their name. Every time I read this thread I inject the word "amazing" in there

never ever drawn that connection before in my life haha, curious as to how many have because i don't believe it's in any way intentional

I think i read something somewhere about that being intentional. Also, they chose it because it has an "a" and a "z", and their logo suggests they have everything from "a to z" and also looks like a smile.
