Exactly, that's how bad the prequels were. Although ewoks are debatable there is a ton of other great stuff in Jedi. Jabbas palace, final showdown between luke and vader, etc. and I would take ridiculous ewoks over generic clones soldiers.

Jedi also carries on the narrative and story telling from 4/5 though, it just has more dramatic resonance and depth.

Its easily the weakest of the originals by a big margin, but it is still on a whole nother plane of existence to the prequals which are all just utter **** as ****.

Also the corner stone of that film is Luke confronting Vader/Emperor. Just that scene elevates the film above the prequels.

The best film of the prequels is clearly 2 tho. 3 LOL, the way Anakin turns to the dark side is so casual likes he deciding what shoes to put on.

Going to the dark side because they have a better HMO

Haven't seen it in 15 years, but Ewoks throwing rocks at Stormtroopers doesn't make it a bad movie in and of itself; it just means there's one particular sequence that is questionable or bad.

Pretty much agreed. Although sometimes I'm almost inclined to suggest that 4>5, just because of how it established the characters and how well it works as a standalone movie (since there was no guarantee of sequels, obv).

Like I feel that ESB, great as it is, was almost a little lazy with its ending...sure, you have the awesome Luke/Vader fight and the father reveal towards the end, but then the "denouement" was basically just R2 fixing the hyperdrive and making Admiral Piett **** his pants. Knowing there's another movie coming doesn't excuse you from having a climactic finish.

Anyway, I'm not saying ANH necessarily has enough going for it to be ranked on top, just that there's an argument for it.

Saying tv shows are episodic is not quite a complete truism... the american market has finally discovered the novelas format.

"Learning about characters" is not the secret of film.

TV (and serials) are a different animal -- they just go on and on. The storytelling is episodic. What happens next? And then what happens after that? And then? The story can literally go in any direction at any moment, there's no purpose other than to keep you guessing for short-term entertainment, and there's no reason why the show can't end at episode 10 or episode 910 other than it gets cancelled or the writers finally run out of material.

And that is what sucks about what Star Wars has become. The story was already told in "A New Hope", "The Empire Strikes Back", and "Return of the Jedi". There was no need to tell the backstory in the prequels, because none of it was interesting in the slightest bit, and was all better left unsaid. You know how some stories are not as funny second-hand? Well Star Wars was the opposite ... the Clone Wars and Anakin Skywalker and everything else was better second-hand, when Obi Won talked about it in the originals. It was boring as hell to actually watch all of it, never mind the fact that the writing and directing sucked even more.

But now one day there will probably be 30 Star Wars movies.

Skywalker, Solo, and Vader will be just a small number of endless good guys and bad guys, and that's dumb as hell, but shows you what kind of mind Lucas has. He wasn't interested in telling the story of the original trilogy, he was always in love with those dumb 1950s and 1960s sci-fi serials that he wanted to emulate.
This is disingenuous. The original story was told in A New Hope. The sequels are still sequels; you don't get to pick and choose which ones truly counted as part of "the original work" to fit your argument that serialized things suck.

Some story worlds are conducive to many different kinds of stories across different mediums. Star Wars is one of them. Many of them have been bad thus far yea, but with good creators and creative freedom there is a lot of potential.

Gareth Edwards to direct star wars

'Godzilla' director Gareth Edwards to direct 'Star Wars' spinoff film
May 23, 2014, 8:25 AM EST
By Jordan Zakarin
TheWrap

Gareth Edwards has skyrocketed all the way to a galaxy far, far away. The "Godzilla" director will make the first stand-alone "Star Wars" film after J.J. Abrams' "Episode VII."

Edwards' movie will open December 16, 2016, a year after "Episode VII" is due out. Disney and Lucasfilm plan to release a new "Star Wars" film each year, claiming prime real estate in the holiday season. Some of those will follow the originals, while others will be spin-offs, investigating bit characters and new characters in greater depth.

No plot details were given for the film, and the cast remains a secret. It would stand to reason that at least some of the new members of the "Episode VII" cast, led by Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, could appear in the film.

"Godzilla," which has grossed more than $200 million in its first week of release, is Edwards' second film, and his first with a real budget. He previously directed the "Monsters," a 2010 release made for $500,000.

The fact that that are creating actual sets, puppets, monsters is a nice throwback to original trilogy. All that CGI in the prequels was terrible. I'm sure it will still have a lot but actual physical objects makes it look so much better IMO...

I think I already said this, but I really hope that not all of the spin-offs are just stand-alone movies of the most popular characters (Han Solo origin, Boba Fett, Yoda, etc.). I want to see like a random drama on a random planet and a police procedural and a mystery on Dagobah and "Tales From Mos Eisley Cantina" with a new self-contained story each episode.

I'm just stoked that Gwendoline Christie (Brienne from Game of Thrones) was cast. Hopefully they use her and Adam Driver well.

this will probably sound dumb, but the third one is rumored to be Red 6? not sure if that's the right name, but it's basically the star fleet Luke was in. I have almost zero interest in that. i don't want to see a movie that is probably almost entirely space battles... like i said, probably dumb.

So a bunch of concept art leaked. Not going to post links as they're widely available and being taken down and reposted.

I don't particularly mind spoilers, and I wouldn't say that any of these photos are really huge spoilers about anything, but I would definitely avoid reading any comments or rumors as there seems to be a major one floating around out there.

Here's one cool but not very spoilery sample. There are others a little more revealing but not a big deal I wouldn't think.
