I remember the first time I saw Die Hard.

First thoughts: wow this is really good.
2nd thought: Wow Carl from Family Matters is in it!

You were thinking punchline, but got a big dose of wholesome

The Book of Genesis is so much Better.

You know how there are those times in life when you say something cutting with the primary intent of being funny, but you mean what you say, and thus you can't say that you were "just kidding" because you know you would deserve a rusty knife to the neck if you said that when you were not, in fact, kidding?

There needs to be a better word for that situation. If I need to clarify my intent, I've fallen back on something like, "I was playing it for laughs," but that's clunky as hell. And frankly it still runs the grave risk of sounding like I'm falsely saying "just kidding" in another way.

It's a very old-fashioned turn of phrase, but that used to be called "kidding on the square."

Isn't a better option than trying to somehow ease the offense you've given to just not cause offense in the first place?

Oftentimes the thing being said isn't necessarily being directed at the person who would theoretically be offended, so it isn't really an issue of "easing the offense," as much as anything it's more often just contextualizing that I am saying something harsh with dark glee rather than with anger.

Also the answer is rarely to pass on the chance for good humor as long as you're operating in the proper setting for it.

Al Franken used the term to great effect in one of his books.

That term is streets behind.

The Franken thing got me curious. Re: Trump circa 2017

Quote:
"The book is coming out May 30, so I still think there's a very decent chance he'll still be president," Franken deadpanned to Capital Download last Thursday in his first interview about the book. Seriously: Does he think the president will serve the full four years of his term?

"I don't know," he replied. "That was kind of a joke. But it's kidding on the square."

Which is, he explained, "making a joke that you also mean."
Safe to say that I don't feel too weird about having not heard of that phrase when the story feels a need to proactively explain WTF he means.
11-29-2023 , 04:57 PM
Yeah, he had to explain it in his book too, AFAIK. Back when "on the square" was current slang for honest communication, adding kidding to it made sense. Now it always requires explanation.

I wouldn't feel bad. If I hadn't read the book I wouldn't have known it and every time I've used the phrase no one knows what it means.

I don't always agree with Al but I do enjoy his comedy.

After all the drugs and booze, I'm surprised to say that it was encephalitis that got him.

A legend has passed. A true hero and believer. Farewell beloved comrade. My thoughts are with your family and friends. We will honour your legacy.

I'd say I'm shattered, but I'm frankly surprised he made it out of the 90s. Still, huge respect.
