I think there's way less social pressure in the USA to not be dumb

this is a land of participation trophies

having churches the size of a major league stadium probably adds some extra dumb as well

We have it bad here in the UK as well.

The reason is Russia.

There is a double whammy of Russia both attempting agit prop via social media and also our respective governments adopting the Russian model of ideological power, which is achieved via efforts to make truth unknowable.

It doesnt help that when broadcasting an event such as the NCAAF final a lot of ESPNs time is dedicated to "here is how social media saw the game" as opposed to asking someone like Nick Saban hey, what did you make of Joe Burrows game.

This obsession with social media reaction is killing sport in Australia as well.

ICU beds are usually 10-15% of total hospital beds.

The rest of these hospitals are ghost towns besides the ICU. Everyone is afraid to go there. Rightfully so.

So the rub of this that we have a lot more people dying for COVID as well as other diseases they would normally go visit the hospital.

And you can’t just convert the other part of the hospital to ICUs. Well, you can, but at a huuuge cost.

USA depressing.

Wouldn't 50% ICU capacity on any normal non covid day be kind of low anyways?
In 3 weeks time it will probably be a total **** show.

Yeah, how many times have your heard 'math's not my thing' from an american?

I've discussed this with friends (american expats) who live in China and I'm told it's like saying 'yeah, alphabet, not really my thing'

What if I told you it is by design that Americans are so dumb? Does that sound like a crazy conspiracy too?

It truly is scary and sad.

Seriously, ignorance is bliss.

Went to Walmart this morning because they finally had a dumbbell set in stock. Price gougers had been buying them up and reselling them on Facebook at like 3x the cost.

Stood in line to get in, and about half the people weren't wearing their masks properly. They have them pulled down by their chin, or under their nose.

I've also noticed even though we have a statewide mask mandate in public places, supervisors and managers seem to think it doesn't apply to them.

I've often wished I was able to believe in the Magic Man in the Sky. It would sure make the dread of death a lot more bearable if I thought I were going to a solid gold castle in the sky when I died. Or, you know, 40 virgins would be ok too, I guess.

I found the opposite, myself, that losing my belief in the Magic Sky Man made the idea of death much easier. My denomination focused a LOT more on the fear of punishment than the delight of the reward.

I'm fortunate to have not ever had any kind of religious programming to have to get over. Only a few years of AA/NA when I was first getting clean.

Ok that was the first I've seen actual numbers. But it still doesn't say what % of the total tests it was. I assume something like Quest Diagnostics is doing a huge % of the actual tests.

I'll take the over on Earth's existence vs humanity's. Not real sure how we'd settle up though.

Maybe SGT RJ is on to something. Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise and all that.

Agree with the SGT on death re: Magic Sky Man.It's just another inevitable transition, not something to be feared. Hopefully I can live without too much pain and discomfort until that time.

Seems to me that when science and religion have been in conflict, science has a few thousand year winning streak. I'm on team science. It's just easier to accept what's demonstrably true, and ignore what is not.

Yeah the article I read said it was 300 clinics and then preceded to question all the numbers everywhere.

So what is it? A few clinics or 300? Depends what article I'm reading and who wrote it. So it's difficult to find out. For someone like myself who doesn't have a ton of time to investigate it I'll never know.

It's a bunch of small clinics that don't process a ton of tests compared to the big guys. Florida has run close to 3 million tests total. The largest amount listed as a clinic that reported 512 positive tests. So you'd assume they've run like 5k tests total.

But again, all this is going to affect is FL's positivity rate.

Yeah the other article said nothing about the rate. It changes everything. The positive test numbers are still the same. That's why Miami has run out of ICUs.
