My wife's firm has a case like that right now. The firm "fired" almost half their employees for poor performance. They did part of it right, in that they used past performance appraisals and fired the half with the lowest scores. They are still going to lose at the employment commission. Trying to pretend that layoffs are firing for cause is one of the oldest tricks in the book and will almost always lose at the hearing. It is pretty stupid anyhow, because your unemployment tax goes up a very small amount relative to the risk you are taking. When they get caught, they will still pay the higher unemployment compensation, plus a penalty of 50% of the total unemployment compensation in our state (which is WAY more than what they would have paid in tax).

Exact opposite here in Myrtle Beach. Less than 10 % of people where masks in public including bars and restaurants. Maybe about 25% of service industry wearing them.

So do these unemployment rules mean the scumbag poker pro types could go to Texas, get a job as a poker dealer (or any random job anywhere with exposure to the public), work a few weeks, quit due to one of the COVID reasons, then get unemployment for the rest of the year, while continuing to play poker at the same time???? What a scam.

If I were a poker room manager I would be especially wary of hiring anyone who might be looking to do this kind of thing.

Unemployment insurance is based on your reported earnings in the past. In general it is based on the past year in every state I know of. You will not earn enough in a few weeks to qualify for unemployment.

But even if you only get $1 from your state you will still get the $600 weekly from the federal part.

The stimulus bill was so, so, stupid. It would have been 1000x better for the economy to do temporary universal basic income.

just find someone with a corp who trusts you, have them put you on payroll retroactively then apply for unemployment effective 1st day of the following quarter

I have a family member who’s a student that was laid off from his part time job. He was earning 240/wk and expected to only get $60/wk. He was surprised when he starting receiving checks for $660.

Hey all, wanted to report on what Covid-19 really is like. So I found out today that I tested positive. I’ve had symptoms for 5 days and honestly it hasn’t been that bad. Had a fever for 2-3 days and was extremely fatigued. Starting to feel better now and honestly just have a little fatigue but can tell I’m going to recover well.

As more things open up there will be more drastic labor shortages. Bars and other competitive employers will be able to pay more to lure lower paid no-tips workers like grocery store workers away from their jobs, and then shelves will be even emptier.

A lot of people won't go back to their old jobs yet because they will still be able to get unemployment.

Employers have to pay more than the unemployment benefits and more than other jobs to get people to work for them.

(Or pay people in cash under the table, so maybe those kinds of jobs will be staffed.)
