Rolling average looks to be down about 15% week over week (calculating it in my head).

A lot of that is due to lag in reporting. Look at the other highest increase % days

yeah that's true. that's good. i was just really hoping for a low tuesday since we've had such relatively low numbers past few days. so it's a gut punch to see today's number so high

The fact he waited for this to be his first invocation of the Defense Production act just ratchets up the dirtbag factor. Such a total POS.

Just FYI, this wasn't the President's first invocation of the DPA:

Also, ban for politarding, especially when 27 has his facts wrong.

DANG IT!

I thought I remembered reporters asking numerous times why he was refusing to go DPA route, but you are obviously correct. Still, the main reason he didn't was Jared had a meeting with all the CEOs and they told him to tell Trump not to invoke.

I decided to be less lazy.

This Saturday to Tuesday = 7075 total deaths, 1769 per day (per Worldometer)
Previous Saturday to Tuesday = 8088 total deaths, 2022 per day

Decrease of 12.5%

Most of the states with big numbers look like they are trending down. Some of the other states are level or ambiguous. Minnesota is the only one I see that seems to be definitely trending in the wrong direction and has large enough numbers to potentially become a problem in the near future.

Today was destined to be a bad reporting day because the weekend dip was more pronounced than usual. The numbers are going to be descending pretty slowly... but getting below 1800 is pretty promising considering that in the last two weeks we had some non-Tuesdays that were over 2500.

How about a ban for semantics? 1st or 2nd use? Who cares? Trump has failed woefully in his use of the DPA, that is clear. Now he's using it to protect the owners/industry in what is sure to be a blood bath of workers.

This.

Should send in the deniers/open up protesters to work those meat-packing lines.

The meat packing plants should all be closed for a month for cleaning. In 30 days time there will be zero debate as to whether or not they should be reopened.

My impression is that most people are still pretty scared of this and are trying to protect themselves regardless of what their governors say. There will be some setbacks along the way, but they won't be large explosions like what we just went through -- at least not in the summer months when the weather is giving us a little bit of help and while people are still worried. I'm more worried about what will happen after we reach the point where the daily death toll has become really small and people start to relax too much. That's when you might get an R=2 sort of thing instead of the R=1.3 that you might get right now in some places.

With most states still locked down and contact tracing teams being assembled, I think we're probably through the worst of this. Our country has too much technology and too many smart people to not find a way to overcome Trump, even if it's been a very circuitous journey. Public polling shows strong support for doing smart things. Most people will do what it takes to not die. We just need to bridge the gap from where we are now to a new equilibrium where infections are a bit lower and masks are ubiquitous and we have some trace/test/isolate going on. If we can get there then it becomes all downhill.

There are probably problems in getting enough labor of this, but I feel like the meatpacking plants and Amazon warehouses etc should operate like oil rigs. Work 14 days straight and then have 14 days vacation while a new crew takes your place. Disinfect everything and/or let everything sit for a full day when changing crews. If a sick person comes to work, there would only be time for a couple cycles of transmission before the chain gets interrupted.

Or if you can't hire enough people for that, just do the 14 days on/14 days off and increase to 11 hours a day. People won't like working 154 hours in 14 days, but with all the vacation and the benefit of not dying they'd probably accept it.

Of course, this will all become moot if we can just get enough testing capacity to test people's coworkers once they get sick. Seems like this ought to be a top priority.

Huge disagree on through the worst of this

Georgia has opened back up restaurants inside and ac spreads this thing

More people have it today than did a month ago which means it spreads easier and faster

That attitude that we are past the worst of it is going to make this worse because people will be less safe and things will open up more and more.

There is zero chance that 2 weeks ago was our largest death week.

It's not true that more people have this now than a month ago (at least not in terms of the number of infectious people -- those that have contracted it more recently). Deaths are trending down and the number of new cases has been trending down since nearly the start of the month. Monday had the fewest new cases reported since March 29. I'm not a big fan of relying much on reported cases, but it can only be a good sign if the numbers are trending down even as capacity is ticking up. And most of the country's population remains under stay-at-home orders for at least a few more weeks.

If you think more had it a month ago than now then there is no point in arguing any more

None of us make the decisions so this doesn’t even matter; I’m tired of sounding the alarm

We’ll just let it play out this year and see what happens. Hopefully I’m way off, but I don’t think so.

In the context of the covid news cycle, this is very old news.
