Of course, of course.

Sadly our species just doesn't seem to be able to exercise appropriate foresight and the discipline to prepare accordingly. We only take action once we see the evidence of it happening. It's mindbogglingly stupid that the dozen or so states who have still taken little to no action because the spread has just started out there.

It confirms for me what I've suspected about our response to climate change, that no significant action is going to happen until something drastic and undeniable occurs like an entire portion of a continent floods.

I mean... if our country's response to the pandemic was to make a run on the tp, just imagine if they make a run on something that's actually important.
Even if this is true, there is no justification for saying they do absolutely no good. It is important that people be able to trust that the advice given through the CDC and WHO is as accurate as possible. If they think masks would help, but the biggest priority is to provide masks to health care workers, they should say that. It is not ok for them to lie to the public to protect their supply chain. The government has the authority to require manufacturers and distributors to provide their masks and distribute them as they see fit.

It also isn't entirely unclear that stores running out of TP was based primarily on hoarding. People were advised to get multiple weeks of provisions and now they are spending 24 hours a day at home instead of spending the majority of their waking hours outside the home. Logically, they will require more TP than the did previously. Businesses almost always buy the huge rolls that have a completely different distribution system and I'm betting they have a ton of unsold TP.

Once it became clear that stores were running out, I'm sure there was some panic buying and overpurchase. But I'm not entirely convinced that was the primary cause. At my local store at the outset of this thing, they were out of a whole ton of items (all meat, all bread, all water, etc). Its just funny to focus on TP.

I think a 20 spot here is good and will be greatly appreciated by any driver.

Also, my JOCKO masks arrived!. Pretty swell imo, I'll post a pic later maybe.

By the strategic supply being "ours"/not their's ... did he mean "us, the royal family and friends?" If not, what?

Just saw the numbers for today and it's shocking. 1200 dead in France today and 6600 in ICU care. The country is running out of ICU capacity, they already increased it from the original 5000.

The numbers for US is pretty surreal as well. 270 000 confirmed cases. I don't really see this ending unless a vaccine is produced, which at best is 12-18 months...

Dr. Osterholm, the director of the Univ. of Minnesota's CIDRAP, says "we may have 20% of Americans at most" infected during this first wave of C-19. He goes on to say that if we assume ~60% of Americans will eventually be infected, that leaves many people yet to be infected in the coming months (I'm guessing he's referring to the second wave later this year).

http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/covid-19/p...virus-response

Additionally, he's very critical of WHO during the last few minutes of the 36 minute podcast. Also, he is skeptical of any seasonal fluncuation. Finally, he's pissed that certain organizations misled about the effectiveness of N95 masks ... that you must always be honest about the science under all circumstances.

Mine was ~1 week from order to delivery, but just noticed it now had a note saying demand has pushed that back to 12-15 days. I would imagine a small order like mine could still be around a week though, which isn't bad imo.

Except, of course, by the only measure that counts. That said, I have no idea when the flu season is in a country on the equator, like, let's say, Ecuador.

Since you all are wondering about why we are short on masks:

U.S. exported millions in masks and ventilators ahead of the coronavirus crisis

American companies sold more than $17.5 million worth of face masks, more than $13.6 million in surgical garments and more than $27.2 million in ventilators to China during the first two months of the year, far exceeding that of any other similar period in the past decade, according to the most recent foreign trade data available from the U.S. Census Bureau.

There is also very complex political issues around masks right now:

US accused of 'modern piracy' after diversion of masks meant for Europe

It's a mixture of political force and private buyers in the US outbidding public health in Europe. I'll let you all read it and come to your own conclusions.

Then there is this:

'There's no better present': Chinese businesses send masks to European clients

Some of this isn't even being accepted.

Then there is an alternative to the N95 called KN95 that the FDA won't approve of:

America Could Import Countless More Face Masks if Federal Regulators Would Get Out of the Way

Basically, it's a huge mess.

This one issue is a microcosm of the main subject of politics, which is the role that a government should play in respect to its citizens, and whether or not a government is ever in a position to know what is best for its people better than the people themselves know.

I agree that in the vast majority of cases, it is in the best interests of the people for its government to be as honest, open, and truthful with them as possible.

But let's face it, there are countless ways that people do not act in their own best interests, either as individuals or as a group, let alone in the best interests of their fellow humans.

I mean, we still see people socializing like everything is fine, even with their governors imploring them to stay the **** inside.

I can absolutely see the danger in them advocating for masks, and people panic buying, overusing them, and using them incorrectly, and then having that lead to a shortage for the medical community, costing far more lives than it saves.

I'm all for the government staying out of our personal business, and people should totally have the right to blow their own brains out if they want. But when people's actions start affecting other people's lives, especially if we're talking about their actions literally leading to other people dying, there comes a point where I'd be okay with the government straight up lying to us if it's for our own good.

I'm NOT saying that this situation falls into that category. The optimal move here would be to tell people the truth, but to spend some time and energy to educate the masses on the appropriate usage, to campaign against hoarding them, etc. And then see what happens. If people do hoard them and continue to use them incorrectly, they should take more dire actions.

No I don't trust the government but I sure as hell don't trust people as a whole either.
