I never thought about it. I assume some are better than others, heh. Do you work with large fleets or owner operators?

I've heard of companies paying drivers by percentage, brokering their own loads and doctoring the paperwork to screw their drivers out of money.

I work for Schneider National's brokerage division. We work with carriers as big as Swift, Knight, and Hunt down to as small an operation as a one man show.
We have found our best carriers are usually in the 50-250 truck range or so. Big enough to handle volume but still small enough to care about service.

As far as doctored paperwork/double-brokered loads, it happens, sure. We are huge on tracking and PODs though so if we find out it happens that carrier is deactivated with us on the spot.

Over the past few years we've really put a big emphasis on our carrier relationships (since as a brokerage we really are just the middle man). At Schneider our carriers are just as important as our customers. Without that truck their precious freight ain't moving.

I didn't see these questions asked

Trailers get swapped, but what about trucks? Do you have "your" truck?
What kind of MPG?
How much better is an empty trailer than a full one?
Do people ever actually have empty trailers?
Does yours have a bed above it? I noticed with Freightliners there's different classes of trucks and some have big aero foils up top, some have cabins, I dunno.

You get assigned a truck and it's yours.

Quote:
What kind of MPG?
6-7MPG

Quote:

Full trailers are better for everything except going up hills and MPG. Traction/control is better and some companies don't pay for empty miles.

Yes, it's called 'deadheading'.

Most have beds behind the seats, called a sleeper berth. The company I'm looking at has new Peterbilts and this is what they look like:

You've mentioned you avoid Truck stops, but what about highway rest areas? Do you consider those about the same?

What's the longest you've overslept? Ever wake up after a deep sleep and have no idea where you are?

How many miles do you have under your belt at this point?

What are your thoughts on motorcycles?

What is the longest stretch of road you've driven without seeing another vehicle?

Please evaluate the accuracy of this infographic.

Do you have dreams about driving? If so, how are they different from reality?

When I was OTR I mostly parked near hotels/motels for the wifi. I only used rest areas when my hours were up to get some sleep and keep moving but never had any problems. Lots of truckers use truck stops for their 36 hour resets and it just gets weird.

Waking up not knowing where I was happened a bit when I first started/wasn't use to being on the road. The funniest sleep stuff happens at my current job when I wake up from a 15 minute nap behind the wheel and think I'm still on the road and slam on the brakes. That's really really terrifying.

As a motorcyclist, I can't imagine truckers really care much. Obviously it's our responsibility to keep out of the way of trucks, but it's trivially easy. I would never expect a trucker to notice me until I've passed him.

About 600,000 miles.

I give them more room than I do cars, they make me nervous.

Maybe 100 miles on back roads in the SW.

Maybe those slow ass harleys or old dudes on goldwings, but you aren't giving me room. Either I'm staying back out of your way or passing you very fast.

What city or area do you hate driving through weather not withstanding. I would think there may be some obvious ones, but curious as to what you think.

LA obviously. All cities suck. Phoenix and Portland area stand out as maybe not obvious. New Jersey is really tight. NYC obviously.

I was driving our companies nicest truck, a 2008 Freightliner, but it blew up a few weeks ago because our mechanic forgot to put a new oil filter in when they changed the oil. I can take a pic of the junker I'm driving tomorrow. All our trucks are day-cabs, nothing cool.

I've done that brake thing after waking in my car before!

Service life of a truck? How often do they get completely replaced?

Preferred brand? Ever been in a Mercedes?
