Comparing a 4 handed game vs. a 9 handed game. NL - Holdem
Does the range of technically appropriate playable hands change?

By a modest amount... maybe 1-2% in each position due to card removal effects.

Yeah aside from card removal, it's pretty much the same. Maybe add a few more hands per seat. So if you're 4-handed and first to act, you wouldn't have an EP range, you'd play your standard cutoff range and adjust from there once you have some basic reads.

I guess I would have thought fewer people, greater range. I mean, if you're playing four-handed, or even heads up, wouldn't KJo seem more playable?

Yes. Look at starting hand charts for 6 handed vs 9 handed, and you will see a much wider range for 6 handed. So this will certainly be true if you are only 4 handed.

You use the hands starting from the BTN then CO ...
So you drop UTG & MP ranges, which does make you play more hands overal, but from each position the range you play doesn't change that much.

In 6-max if you're UTG you would use the LJ range from full ring

A button open in a 3max game is strategically identical to a BTN open in a 9max game. There's two players ahead either way. The only difference, as Brokenstars mentioned, is a tiny bit of card removal from UTG-CO folding stuff.

Aside from the BTN, would that apply to the other positions as well? 6 handed? End of day, I'm wondering if one's range should change based on the size of the game. I tend to loosen up when playing with fewer players.

Yes ofc. A CO open is a CO open. A HJ open is a HJ open.

The number of players left to act infront of you is what that really matters.
