Trying to work out some EV calculations without a calculator but I seem to be screwing up somewhere...

Say if someone offered you a deck of cards and it cost you $1 to draw if you hit an ace you get paid $5 and if you hit the ace of spades you get $20.

So it would be:

3/52 = (3x100)/52 = 6r12/100 = 0.06 - 0.012 = 0.057
1/52 = (1x100)/52 = 2r4/100 = 0.02 - 0.004 = 0.016
48/52 = (48x10)/52 = 9r12/10 = 0.90 - 0.012 = 0.88

0.057 x 5 = (0.057x1000) x 5 = 285/1000 = 0.28
0.016 x 20 = (0.016x1000) x 20 = 320/1000 = 0.32
0.88 x -1 = (0.88x100) x -1 = -88/100 =-0.88

-0.88 + 0.32 + 0.28 = -0.28

So your EV is -0.28.

The percentages only add up to about 95% so i'm working something out wrong also is there an easier way of doing this in your head maybe using ratios or fractions? I don't know any other methods of dividing small numbers by big numbers other than multiplying and dividing which takes me a while without a calculator.

This isn't an EV calculation for poker I was just trying to practice EV calculations in general without using a calculator like the infamous coinflip example. You're just picking a card from the deck if you get an ace you win $5 if you get the ace of spades you win $20 and it costs you $1 every time you pick a card. All the bracket stuff is just multiplying a small number so it's easier to divide.

I'm just trying to figure out how to do EV calculations easily and in the book Poker maths that matters he basically works out the Probablity of an outcome then multiplies it by amount won or lost for each possible outcome then adds up the results for expected value.

But trying to divide 3 by 52 and then trying to multiply 0.057 by 5 without a calculator takes a while.

Although is any of this really needed at the table?

ok this is an extremely dumb question but I feel so overwhelmed with all this useful information of the site. So where should I begin to better my no limits texas hold em game?

An easy/quick/fun/free way to do it is look at videos on the internet. Make sure that they match with the limit you are playing.

And if you really want to improve and are ready to put some money in studies, there is a ton of books that will improve your game.

Equity calculations.

4 cups one has $5 under it, it costs $1 to pick a cup.

0.25*5=1.25
0.75*-1=-0.75
= 0.50 for an expected value of 50 cents per wager.

Is that right?

Does holdem manager 2 tag opponents automatically? fish, TAG etc ?

What if a player plays fishy over only 30 hands or so, it still tags them but may not be reliable..

I've been tagged rock, fish, whale, loose passive, loose aggresive, tight aggressive and ABC player in one 2k hand zoom session. It might be more accurate over a large sample of hands but even then people are capable of changing gears and trying new styles and I doubt it will re-tag players quick enough for it to be of any use. Could be useful to quickly identify the fish and whales when you sit at a table though.

You can change the settings so it tags people based on the sample of hands you have on them and their stats.
