This is a very good thread for beginners to read.

Many people lack a fundamental understanding of probability and statistics.

If I shamelessly bump my own thread do I need to post a postsaver or threadsaver?

DiamondDog's threads are an excellent source for that:

My five-year anniversary is coming up and sadly 2016 was not a good poker year for me so I have nothing new to meaningfully contribute to the forum. I still believe there is a lot of value in these posts for beginners so for my 5-year anniversary I'm just bumping my 4-year anniversary post.

Happy reading to those who haven't read it yet.

Define "can't afford". Is this like a sliding scale?

Keep in mind I can't hear your tone of voice or see your facial expressions. I assumed that when you said "threadsaver?" you were implying I should post one to accompany my shameless bump. I did so and came up with a silly justification for it just as a joke.

I honestly can't tell whether or not the quoted is a serious question.

No, serious question. I want a full risk of ruin formula for each steak and how alcohol consumption might influence said formula.

Dal, you should know by now that it's ok to be wrong here. You might think that you're doing the right thing by abstaining from posting. I'm inclined to disagree. Inaction leads to complacency and falling behind the learning curve. If you're not proactive, you're not learning. Post more imo. You don't have to be correct all the time to contribute. I go out on limbs often, sometimes with ridiculous theories that make me look crazy. 😄 I don't give a **** though. I almost always learn stuff by putting ideas out there for others to pick apart.

Congrats on the anniversary. 🙂

Thanks for the encouraging words bob and I hope you enjoyed my threadsavers as much as I did .

It's all good man. I believed a year ago and still believe now that my 4-year post should be required reading for anyone first getting into poker and even for anyone who has been playing for awhile and is not yet a winner. Heck, just looking at the first page of posts on BQ I can see 7 different posters whose questions would be answered if they'd read my post.

Having said that, I'm glad there are people who DON'T read it because the poker economy would dwindle to nothing otherwise

I missed the 10 year anniversary of my writing this thread. I was always proud of it. I believe every word is as relevant to beginners in 2025 as it was in 2015.

Forget poker for a minute and let's just talk about general gambling:
1. Suppose you can make a bet that gives you a 40% chance of doubling your money. Is it a good bet?
2. Suppose you can make a thousand such bets. Should you do it?

Clearly #1 and #2 are bad bets. You'd have to get lucky to win bet #1. For bet #2 you're all but guaranteed to lose unless you go on a disgustingly sick improbable run of good luck.
I may be misinterpreting, but if you can double your money 40% of the time, that’s a +EV action.

EV = Pr(win) * $Win - Pr(lose)*$Lose

Suppose you have to bet $100 to win $200 and you win 40% of the time.

EV = 0.40*200 - 0.60*100 = 80 - 60 = 20 (> 0)

Indeed it is a question of interpretation and I maybe could have clarified.

In *my* mind, if I sit down with $100 and get up with $200, I doubled my money. So I only "won" $100, not $200.

Does that help?

ASSUME Hero has $100: Villain bets $100 into a $100 pot. Hero calls $100
My EV equation shows a win gives you $20 expected profit.

An alternative equation is to use the total return with a win which is $200 +$100 = $300
Then EV = 0.40 * $300 – $100 = $20. If hero does win, he now has $300 but had to risk $100 to get it. The amount won, $200, is twice hero’s stack of $100

Your interpretation is that hero ends up with $200 after the bet if he wins. This might occur if the pot is 50 and villain bets 150. Then

EV = 0.4*200 -0.6*150 = -10, a bad bet

So, yes, we are using different interpretations.

By the way, nice thread
