To anyone familiar with London,

How good a city is London for commuting by bike? Would it be realistic to have like 6 miles on bike to work?

cool, ty.

Looking for places to live in a city you don't know sucks. In Copenhagen it would be completely standard, but I wouldn't dare thinking about it in Southern Florida.

Whereabouts will you be looking to move to AE?

that's the big question

I'll be starting a PhD at University College London (bloomsbury) but it is a joint position between UCL and National Physical Laboratory. NPL is located in Teddington at Bushy Park and is where the main part of the work will be done, at least for the first year.

So I need to be able to get to both places, so either somewhere with fairly easy acces to public transport to NPL and not to lang transportation time or somewhere in between from where I can bike either way (which would be like Fullham or Chelsea I think, but I also think that is rather expensive places).

Any recomendations or bright ideas?

Friends of mine used to live in Barnes, and I remember it as being a pretty cool place. This is over 25 years ago now tho.

And biking to the two places you mentioned should be super easy if you're young and fit. Very often it will be faster than public transport.

Thats pretty good

Of course what I meant to say is cycling in London is super easy if you're young and fit and have a suicidal death wish ... You have to be bold, fast and aggressive, and super observant and aware of your surroundings and potential dangers. Its not a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park.

OMG ... who knew Denmark was a communist country !!!!

I think there are some cycle routes that direct cyclists and reserve space on secondary roads that won't be as busy as those used on Top Gear video, but there's nothing like that shown on the Copenhagen video.

I used to ride a lot in London, and part of it was the thrill of racing down the center line of Oxford Street and round Marble Arch.

NYC is a whole extra level of thrill, but I'm now old, fat and cautious enough that intersections like Columbus Circle are no longer appealing.

AE, NPL is fairly well served by public transport (My claim to fame is my Grandfather built one of the 1st Accelerators there, and took me on a tour. Funny thing was, the tour guide kept on asking him if he was right!), well at least it was 10 years ago when i last went.
I'd suggest an Oyster Card, and some good shoe leather. I've never had any issues with public transport in London, and I used to go up there a lot. Most of central london is within a 15 minute walk from a tube station, and the buses tend to pick up most of the slack in the greater metroplitan area.

But you might get better advice from a london resident, rather than a fequent visitor like me.

Its the other side of town to me, I'm more East London, so don;t know the area too well, but Hippy is right. Get an Oyster Card for tube and bus travel.

I use the tube every day and while there's always going to be delays for whatever reason, it's OK usually.

The roads themselves are mostly fine for cycling, and there is a new cycling initiative just come in to place by Boris, the Mayor, so it is becoming more friendly. But it's not going to be like what you're used to I imagine.

Edit: and yeah, Chelsea is expensive, so the further out you go the better. Looking at the map you might want to see what prices are like in Wimbledon.

It looks like to get to Teddington you'll need to get the overhead rail so that's close to Richmond & Wimbledon station, and from Wimbledon to Russel Square on the tube will be about 25/30 mins, maybe a little longer looking at the number of stops. But easy enough to cycle to.

I like how this has turned into a "help AE move to London thread"

Thanks guys, I'll surely bother you with more questions before moving.

You might get some good answers in the UK Forum too, formerly the Mr Giblet forum.

weird i just got this come up when randomly browsing 2p2

i just closed the tab as i never seen anything like that pop up before so i just closed it and opened up a new tab.

Its probably an advert causing that. The website/ip that the advert is hosted on has been flagged as having malware, and so when your browser tried to connect, it warned you.

I'm surprised that 2+2 has any adverts from "dubious" sources... unless you count UB
