What's your background? As a full-time Dad how often do you get to play poker? What games / stakes do you normally play?
Curious if you had any other thoughts on specific things that might have surprised you as you got closer and closer to a huge payday.
Buying anything fun with the money?
Sorry about the delay. I'm back at work now and it blows after winning 3x my annual salary in 3 days lol. Thanks 4 the congrats from everyone.
I'm a software developer for a decently sized financial/risk management firm. Grew up in Brooklyn/Queens and live on Long Island now. I have a computer engineering degree and I've been working in the technology industry for the past 12 years. I watched poker on TV for many years but I drummed up the courage to start playing about 3 and a half years ago. I learned by reading books and losing a lot of money on sites like Bodog and in local Long Island games. Through a lot of trial and error I've managed to become a winning player in the live games. I play about 70% plo and 30% nlh usually locally with the occasional trip to Borgata, Foxwoods, and Parx... Usually at stakes anywhere from 1/3 to 5/10. Luckily I have an understanding family which allows me to go out and play 3+ nights a week after handling any responsibilities I have with my kids.
I haven't bought anything yet. I'm moreso focused on getting out of debt, making some improvements to my house, adding to my bankroll and investing but I'm sure there will be at least one frivolous purchase happening sometime soon lol.
The biggest thing that surprised me was the relative tightness of the tournament the whole way thru with rare exceptions like the Grinder. I've played in some super donkey-ish cash games and I expected a 6 max plo tournament to play quite a bit looser than it did. Once I adjusted to the pace, chipping up happened pretty quickly
