This is only for the "legal" sites.. you're much safer playing on an already illegal one like Bovada.

^^^^^^

Funny thing is bigerf is in many ways correct, but I don't think legal sites like NV and NJ would get funds seized, accts would be closed if this new legislation passed bit money returned

The wire act passed in 1961. This is the meat and bones of it.

Whoever being engaged in the business of betting or wagering knowingly uses a wire communication facility for the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of bets or wagers or information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers on any sporting event or contest, or for the transmission of a wire communication which entitles the recipient to receive money or credit as a result of bets or wagers, or for information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.[1]

This will fill you in...

And for completeness, we should add:
In September 2011, the US Department of Justice released to the public a formal legal opinion on the scope of the Act concluding, "interstate transmissions of wire communications that do not relate to a 'sporting event or contest' fall outside the reach of the Wire Act."

The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the Wire Act prohibition on the transmission of wagers applies only to sports betting and not other types of online gambling. The Supreme Court has not ruled on the meaning of the Federal Wire Act as it pertains to online gambling.
But now Adelson, Graham and the others want to change that. They want to shut down internet poker permanently and completely.

My advice is for people to call the congressmen and explain the error of online poker being lumped into this legislation. i have already called a few and emphasized that this is a primary employment for many and that this legislation seeks to get around the ruling on the NY State Supreme Court.

Of course, I also emphasized how "internet forums" are giving a lot of bad press for these bill sponsors/co-sponsors.

It really is incredible that a gambling exec can unilaterally change a gambling law under the pretenses that he is protecting people from gambling.

I've just sent a message to my rep, Cleaver. I told him he was wrong to support banning and regulating is the way to go. I've asked for a response.

Gramps he had it right, he is using that pretense. He isn't going around telling everyone that he's losing business. He's saying that it's evil and no one should do it.

Great! I've also contacted Rev. Cleaver (we have some relationship). I agree that emphasizing regulating a game of skill over banning is a good path.

I agree, and I also agree Sheldon isn't going around telling people the other version (in public) either

Maybe Anderson really does have a very convoluted self-serving view of reality where he actually believes what he's publicly saying on this issue. Whatever the case, the hypocrisy is resounding.

Ugh, let's hope that the lack of bipartisanship and cooperation in Congress will kill this bill dead. What a ****ing waste of time.

Uh huh... Cool story bro. This has nothing to do with a certain political ideology. True Republicans are for personal freedom and limited government. This kind of BS legislation is about $$$. Lobbying is a powerful thing.

Kind of surprising to see California on the list, because didn't NY and Illinois ask the DOJ for the clarification, so they could begin selling lottery tickets online to help deal with their State debt issues? Would have thought California would want to do the same ...

(Like, to sell State lottery tickets within the state to state residents, didn't they need to have the Wire Act narrowed because their internet networks themselves were interstate, running through Texas, Maryland, and Nevada? That got mentioned in the DOJ's ruling: http://www.cga.ct.gov/2012/rpt/2012-R-0036.htm)

Would have thought a lot of states would want to be selling lottery tickets online ...

Why on earth is everyone acting like the world just ended?

Reality check:

A greedy billionaire bought a small set of congressmen and senators.

Said legislators introduced a "ban Sheldon Adelson's competition" bill.

Last I checked, merely doing the above does not = law.

I cannot even fathom this thing getting to the Senate floor while Harry Reid is majority leader. Protip: said majority leader is owned by Sheldon Adelson's competitors he wishes to punish with this bill.

Get worried if this is actually voted on in the Senate.

spoiler: it won't be voted on in the Senate.

I know I should just ignore this kind of stuff, but regardless of how you see "true Republicans" the actual Republican Party is the weird moralistic, religious-centered problem here. I imagine most of us agree with your political opinions, but the fact is the Republican Party is currently not for limited government or personal freedom. I hope you work to change that, but people with those values must vote Democrat for now.

Then you need to read this article from yesterday re: Reid and this bill:

Nevada delegation warily eyes latest push to ban online gaming

WASHINGTON — The Nevada delegation doesn't agree with the latest effort by Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to roll back online gaming to the days when it was totally illegal, with no poker carve-out.

But they won't dismiss Chaffetz and Graham's forthcoming legislation out of hand either.
