To play devil's advocate for those who say a dishonest person would easily get caught keeping the money. How would anybody be able to prove there was $300,000 in the bag?

Say the cab driver took $200,000 out of the bag and left $100,000 to return to the poker player. How does the poker player prove there was $300,000 in the bag to begin with?

Yes he can have the casino say he cashed out with $300,000 but how can you prove that $300,000 was left in the bag in the cab?

Kudos though to the honest cab driver.

they could prove it with video. every person that rode in and got out of that cab would have been on camera. there was a camera in the cab. NO way to get away with the money unoticed

That still doesn't answer the question of how does the poker player prove that the bag contained $300k cash.

If the cab driver was dishonest couldn't he have taken at least some of the money out of the bag because I'm sure at some point in between the cab driver returning the money to the poker player there is a point where the bag of money isn't under camera surveillance.

I would assume if the cab driver takes home the $300,000, the Feds will monitor his bank account and spending habits for the next few years.

So any time someone says "Hey, I lost six figures and I think that guy has it!" the fed launches a multi-year investigation?

My position is if I got in a cab and stumbled onto a sack of cash there is no way I'm going to get away with keeping it. I can smuggle cash out of the cab but I'm going to be questioned and investigated. They are going to piece every move that cab made after he dropped off the poker player. Every stop at traffic lights there will be cameras. Bellagio where I got in cab ( cameras) , my drop off (cameras) unless I picked a random isolated area. The cab will have a camera inside. They will track me to my room and or put my face on TV.. I'm going to be found out. No way to get away with this. Also you would have no time to plan. So the question is - would someone want to hassle with this. You would have to hide the money. You would have to lie to police. All for taking something that didn't belong to me.

The amount of cameras in the casinos and around the strip they would know who what cab took it and who was driving it, where it went etc. You would not get away with it.

For some reason I doubt it is a 'pro' that left it. Why would they take 300k cash around with them? Most of them take chips or leave it in accounts. Getting the cash and going from Cosmo to Palms as well probably someone with a short term rental and isn't in town for long.

You have to wonder how much effort they actually put into finding it. Cabs are not responsible for lost items so its not like they would care that much. most places when you lose something they just say "we'll see if anything turns up". cabbie could totally get away with it.

I have the solution . Let's get Dan Blizarian to drop 300k in the back of a taxi. Rinse and repeat until a driver doesn't return the $$$ . Investigate . If the Feds get him , jail time and a drop kick from one of the DB mafia .

A+ post. Amazing unnoticed trolling to attempt to make this into a tipping thread.

Cabbie would have almost zero shot of getting away with it.

I'm amused at how you take "I'm not certain they were correct" and turn it into "argue for argument's sake". I'm saying the police are not subject experts on civil property law. They're criminal law experts. That's all I'm saying.

Quote:
Why would the law be written in a way as if you accidentally leave a valuable item in a car sale, that you should lose possession of it due to a mistake. You must never make mistakes. How could anyone be so stupid to make a simple mistake like that. ****ing delusional you are bro.
When you deal with the purchase or sale of a large piece of property such as a car or a house, typically the sale is for the item and it's contents at the time of the exchange.

That means if you buy a house and you don't specifically state that the kitchen appliances convey with the house then the prior owner can take anything not bolted down before he moves out.

ON the other hand, vehicle bills of sale don't read the same way, so perhaps property left in the vehicle doesn't convey. I'm not sure - as I said before - and so I stand by what I said - it's a LAWYER you want to talk to in a case like that, not the cops.
