MLB has like 800 players.
NHL has maybe 500.
NBA maybe 300.
NFL maybe 800 or so.

If the pop. is even 1% gay, there should be 20-25 gays in there. We don't know who any of them are. So obviously, it kind of still is a big deal.

Those of you who think otherwise, need to pay much more attention to the hate spouted by the huge majority of society, and see that it is a big deal, and why it is. Maybe in 50 years it wont be, but that's probably a stretch.

sports (and the army) are bad examples, these are strongholds of narrowness.

in europe we still have huge problems with racism amongst sports fans, especially in soccer.

Good blog post, Jason!

It's not a big surprise that there are so few openly gay poker players. Big parts of the online poker community are quite homophobic. If you need proof, you just need to read a random NVG thread about Vanessa Selbst. But that's what I would expect from a predominantly young male community. The majority of young men is homophobic because they are still unsure about their own sexuality.

It's obviously better than in 1955. But it's still a big deal.

Please name ten well known high stakes players that are openly gay. Not rumours.

Good on you Jason. You the man. PokerVT rules by the way.
She formally came out of the closet last year on one of the last PokerRadio podcast shows. Joe Stapleton got her to do it.

Mad Respect Jason, no matter if its 2012 or not, it takes guts to reveal one's true self to the public and not be afraid. He's a boss.

Respect and quiet applause to Jason for doing this. Anyone who says prejudice against homosexuality is a thing of the past doesn't know what the **** they're talking about.

Mad respect Jason I have been a longtime fan maybe after coming out it will help your game cause you wont have excess anxiety. Also, I have been a duuur fan and my brother is a hater and says he is gay. I told him if I was arguably the best cash game player in the world , you could call me gay all you want when I am stacking cake.

Next comment about Daniel Negraneu being gay (or even implying it) is taking a 3 day vacation from the forums.

This may actually change his live game in some situations. Given this information, attractive girls who use their looks to their advantage may need to adjust, and attractive guys may also need to adjust (or at least members of these groups may think they need to adjust, thus changing the dynamic of the game somewhat). Wouldn't matter in online play though that I can think of.

Congrats to him it takes a lot of courage.

Some things about the blog post
- are there a disproportionate amount of gay poker players to the population (like there are women)? I think there is very likely to be less gay poker players than the population and somewhat likely to be more lesbian poker players than the population.
- I know quite a few gay poker players but it is quite interesting how no one really high profile is openly gay

We can have a NSFW thread in NVG with Daniel and Phil Galfond depicted as gay lovers but we cant imply that he is gay? I'm not understanding the logic.

This thread clearly isn't the place for such implications

Yes, shouldn't at least 5% of them be gay? So far, a couple of those I was quite sure were gay got themselves partners of the different sex.

Guess I'm not an expert.
