There are businesses which employ thousands of experts to judge credit risk and to loan money in a profitable manner. You're obviously not one of them, so don't get involved.

Be grateful that the lesson only cost you $400. If you aren't ever going to need a loan at the casino, don't give them.

Ask ibelieveyouoweme80k about his story some time about how bad it can get.

Had a high school classmate borrow $600 sometime after graduating college to pay her rent.

She couldn't pay me back but hinted at sex.

Looking back, I should have taken her up on it because I never got paid back.

She wasn't hot and all I could think about was another friend who had gotten knocked up in a one night stand.

+1

It amazes me that I still hear a variation of this story almost every month, often from very experienced players getting taken. I wonder why - are poker players suckers? too generous? too trusting? does the game just build such camaraderie that people give money away too easy?.....??

Unless you have very very strong evidence to the contrary you should assume every single person in a casino (including staff) is a completely broke degenerate. You won't go far wrong.

In 2019 I wouldn't lend money to anybody whose sole source of income is poker.

If they haven't made enough of a life roll to not need a loan by now they are highly unlikely to in today's games.

That seems like a lot of money to learn a lesson most people already know for free.

hahaha good rule of thumb. a bit harsh but not a bad starting point from the perspective of not lending $.

Anyhow, it's tough to lend relatively small amounts of money and expect to collect on it. You have little legal recourse and the options you do have usually aren't worth the time/expense. You'll eat it all up if you talk to a lawyer or lose a night or two of sleep over it.

There is the option of taking collateral. Could get a watch or two if NYPK is asking you for cash

1. LOL @ lending someone you know casually $400.

2. LOL @ them being a poker player.

3. LOL @ them being a poker player without 2 buyins for a low tier cash game.

You're an idiot OP. You may as well have given a homeless person outside a liquor store a $400 "loan". If you're 19 years old or something, I give you a pass because I was young and stupid once but by your mid-20s you should know this kind of stuff.

If I liked some random player I might sling them $10 for bus money and call it a gift. I wouldn't lend anyone $400 to buy into a poker game, like anyone on Earth.

Nah, 19 year olds don't get a pass. This coming from someone who was scammed on this forum from the "cancer guy" in his mid 20s. I knew better at 19 and I shoulda known better when it came to "cancer guy" but he had a clever story. Either way in the gambling world it's ****ing ******ed to just hand people money as a "LOAN".

Maybe you could have hedged your bets, and negotiated part settlement through non-penetrative sexual activity in a dark room? Alternatively you could have looked up the word "contraceptive" in the dictionary, and rationalised to yourself looks aren't everything.

That put a really funny image in my head. Conversation with some drunk dirty homeless guy as he convinces you he will pay you back and you two walk to the ATM together. After you hand him the money he reassures you one more time then walks in to the liquor store. End scene.

if you can afford $400 you were better off telling the girl that you will go play a hand of blackjack and if you win the hand and double up you will give them $400. at least your having fun doing it.

OP, did the fact this person was a woman have any influence on your lending decision? Not saying this is you, but some men might be more likely to lend money to a woman (I'm sure I don't need to explain the reason why).

Anyway, it's one thing buying your friends some drinks or lending your friend $10 if he forgot to bring some cash with him one time. It's a completely different thing to lend someone who you don't know a 3 or 4 figure amount to gamble with. Never a good idea. Can you explain your entire thought process when you lent this money to a stranger?

Something I've started doing recently when bums try to get me to "loan" them money in a poker room is asking them to repeat the request, but publicly on their social media. For some odd reason nearly all of them suddenly remember they had other things to do...
