You guys coming to Canada to play poker... you should all fly in and have a few days stay booked in a hotel. At the same time you should make arrangements for a room or an apartment after those few days. Travel light: you can buy cheap used furniture easily if you have to. If you want to study at university, this gives you a way to easily and legally stay much longer than as a tourist.

Ah, one of the rare cities to quite often be ranked above or very close to Vancouver on "most liveable" lists, so that makes sense.

It's the same here at 'Red Mtn.',... lots of Aussies living up there in town (Rossland) during the winter months.

yea i was actually thinking about that list and remember that Vancouver was always ranked very well ( i believe it's 1 first and then a fiew 2nd to Zürich ). That's what surprised me, because it seems that high quality living can be much cheaper.

Everyone was wondering what would they do with the low income hotels they shut down for the olympics.. that is horrible. Guess they'll be trying to ship more homeless people to kelowna.

Yes it's basically a self contained room, that has been yuppified. Granted in Toronto or Calgary it still would be expensive maybe 750 or 800 in a nicer part of town.

I was referring to the micro hotels created from the low income hotels that were shutdown. There were also anywhere from 10-20 staff per building.

I went to the dentist at the Denman place mall over in the westend. Would be about a 15 minute walk or so for you. Never had a problem there. Would probably be cheaper that yaletown and downtown dentists, not to mention more availability.

I am buying a new Prius and will be selling my old car in a few days. It's a 2002 Nissan Sentra with 235000km (146k miles). I've driven it for the last 3 years and it never had any mechanical problems. If anyone in Vancouver is interested in buying an old but reliable car, shoot me a pm. I would accept a Stars transfer from a reputable account, or cash obviously.

planning on moving in a few days. im confused about border control. i thought all you had to do is be friendly/honest and show you have monies and ties to us?

i have my place for a month, and a return ticket in a month, but will try and ask for 6 months, and then just extend my place and cancel my ticket. is this an okay plan?

Just got in town today and figured I'd post here to keep it subscribed.

My brother, his GF, and I drove up from Texas through the Blaine crossing w/ a car full of stuff and got through no problem. We packed relatively light and didn't bring monitors, a desktop, etc and just told the agent we were vacationing for possibly up to three months. We're subletting a place for a month to figure out where we want to stay longer term and having a copy of the lease seemed to help a lot.

Things the agent asked about:
- Why we were visiting and how long we're staying (duh)
- If we'd been to Canada before
- What we did for a living back in the states
- Why we drove vs flew
- Why we picked Vancouver

I did bring a copy of bank statements but the money issue never came up so take that FWIW. Still doesn't hurt to bring a copy.

They basically just asked a lot of friendly/nonchalant sounding questions to see if you'd slip up in any way. Just get your story straight, relax, don't talk about poker and you should be good to go.
