I'm not from Vancouver, but noob above who thinks Victoria is comparable to Vancouver in anyway could not be more wrong. The fact that the city's economy can be so ****ty and real estate be so expensive proves this. Nobody wants to go live on an island off the coast of BC, there's nothing about Victoria that is remotely cosmopolitan or sophisticated.

Went to UBC (never even applied to UVic, never even entertained the thought of living in such a tiny town; Vancouver is small enough) and have lived here on and off for 6-7 years and can say if dude thinks "dirtiness, crime, overpopulation, disgusting residential architecture, infill housing, ghettos, gang violence and unconscionable rioting" are actual problems to Vancouver's liveability it is quite possible he has never even been here....

Bottom line, Vancouver has always been at the top of liveability lists for a reason (as dude stated above). It's a world class town.

Wouldn't mind if they shipped the Canucks out of town tho. That would smash about 90% of the problems as noob poster stated originally anyway.

I'd also like to hear this info if anyone has it. Canada is my go-to option if we don't get some sort of regulations passed this year, and crossing my fingers and hoping that they let me through at the border for six months at a time doesn't seem like the ideal plan. FWIW, if I can achieve moderate or better proficiency in French, I'll have the required number of points for a work permit, although I'm not sure how long I'm allowed to stay in Canada on one of those either if I'm just playing poker.

I'm from Seattle and planning on heading up for the $1k tournament Boulevard 500 is having on July 27-29. If anyone wants to meet up PM me. I used to play HS mixed games, but not so much since BF. I'm currently toying with the idea of getting a place up here I could come a week or two a month to play online so if anyone has a couch they want to rent out and wants to meet me first next weekend that'd be cool.

I'm in Oregon right now, and plan on driving into Vancouver and staying there from July 27-October 27 give or take to play online poker.

1. What should I tell the border patrol when I go in/out of canada?

2. I read I don't need a visa to play online poker in Canada. Do I need anything else besides passport, utility bill, bank account? Any Vancouver banks recommended for online poker?

3. Looking for apartments right now...2-3 bedrooms. Any recommendations?

Thanks. Also ty for the headsup on the $1k tournament in vancouver july 27 andrew

Just be very careful when renting from abroad. Lots of scam's out there, don't send much if any money before you get here.

So I should directly tell them if they ask "why are you here?" "I'm going to play online poker for 3 months."

And that won't be an issue?

You would rather say you'll be playing poker live games at casinos, it's just easier for them to process. Just make sure you know the names of the casinos that you are supposedly moving away from home for 3 months to play.

I'm going to be going to Whistler this winter to move into a snowboard/grindhouse for 6 months.

Do I need a visa or can I buy plane ticket, and tell border agent that I'm going to rent a house with a few friends to snowboard there for 6 months and he'll give me a 6month pass?

Thanks

My experiences at the border:

1st trip there I kinda panicked and told the guy I was here for a friend's bachelor party. We went on to play 20 questions about my fake friend with me answering his name address, occupation and such. Long story short, I got back-roomed. Stayed in there for an hour where I eventually told the truth and was let thru. In 3 or 4 trips back since then I've just told them the absolute truth and had no issues. The last time I even got a genuine good luck from the guy. So I'd just tell the truth.

Has anyone brought their dogs up there? I have 2 dogs, a 75 lb pit terrier and a 50 lb border collie mix that I'm trying to bring with. A friend drove his tiny dog up last WCOOP with no issues but mine are bigger and tend to scare non dog-owners. I just read this about Ontario. What... the ****

"The Province of Ontario has an ugly BSL that grants police or animal control officers sweeping powers. This includes search and seizure of a dog deemed to be a “pit bull type” based on visual inspection. If the dog is, in fact, judged to be a pit bull type, the dog will be euthanized – even though it may not have broken any other law."

seems normal that they are allowed to kill your dog on sight? Think I'll be avoiding that border crossing. Also curious about recommended areas to rent a house with a fenced in backyard (Kitsilano?) rather than the downtown apartment this time. Thanks

To be fair 80% of dogs would rather die than live in Ontario

80% of poker players rather commit suicide than listen to an entire episode or your show.

From the PlayNow.com poker site:

"***POKER NEWS ALERT*** The WSOP Circuit is coming to Vancouver! Stay tuned for satellite info coming soon."

Not sure if this is posted anywhere (searched but didn't find anything, didn't look hard). Pretty awesome though, hopefully going to play a couple of these.

Update:

Crossed border in 5 minutes. Answered questions 100% the truth, and he said "You're fine...Just don't stay longer than 6 months". He also said they've sent a bunch of online players back to the US for lying to them about why they came to Canada while they have 2 laptops in the back of car.

Hey guys can someone verify if this is the norm for me?

I'm seeing alot of nice looking apartments/condos 2 bed/2 bath places available for rent of around 750 CAD. Fully furnished! Most of these places are like 20-30 minutes away from Vancouver like Burnaby. Is this considered standard or a friggen steal for this distance from vancouver?

Burnaby is 15-30mins away from downtown Vancouver in normal traffic, about 15mins by Skytrain. $750CAS is a steal.
