He's not, it's just that he's an ass who's loose-passive, instead of a nice guy who's loose-aggressive, making him an easy target.

The fact of the matter is, nobody in the world has won more online and on the tournament circuit with the exception of Phil Ivey, and that deserves at least a little bit of recognition.

After a bad start in 2008, Gus took probably 5 months off away from the tables, returned in August 2008, and has been winning more than anyone ever since. That's while playing more hands and sessions than anybody else at those tables (At least 250k).

He's not as methodical as everyone else, and he's prone to make a lot more mistakes, but he's not some huge whale that everybody likes to pretend they're living off of.

He also, at least in NL, is very willing to call stuff if he thinks he gets proper odds. That's why he makes a lot of calls that look odd. He simply thinks he gets ok value doing so. Then again, I guess some would argue that he prices himself into a lot of things by playing too many hands too far.

But he is very mathematically grounded.

The biggest difference I've noticed between him and everyone else is that he doesn't put as much value in position (especially in hold'em), which puts him in a lot of bad spots, but somehow he's made it work over the long-run.

how come you folded the king-high flush? Were the two villans ultra-nitty or something?

Okay, list players that have won more.

Gus has won $7,297,559 live (tournaments) and 5 million online (that's been documented). $1.4 million from 2007-01-01 to 2009-01-31, and $3.5 million that isn't recorded in the database.

That comes out to about $12.25 million dollars combined.

Now on the all-time money list, do you want to find me one player other than Phil Ivey that that can equal or surpass that sum if you include their internet winnings? Keeping in mind that none of the players ahead of him are listed as winners on HSD's top 50 from Jan 2007 to now.

(I realize there's a major "but how much did he lose?" factor in play here, but I'm working with what's been documented, obv.)

According to HSD, Gus has won $3.904.480,56 from 2008-06-01 to 2009-01-31, putting him behind Phil Ivey, Phil Galfond, and Patrik Antonius.

Again, if you include the the $3.5 million that wasn't recorded in the database he's made $7.4 million from August until now, putting him ahead of the other 3 rather easily.

Re: February High Stakes Thread

I thought Gus was a loser at high stakes NLHE but crushed Omaha 8 or something like that?

EDIT: Nevermind he lost money playing O8 in 2008 according to HSDB.

One interesting thing is that HSDB has Gus as an overall loser for both 2007 and 2008 (about -800k in 07 and -1 mill in 08) but he's up almost 3 million just this year so far which puts him up from 2007-2009 total. So clearly he's a wildly swingy player and that +1.4 million from 2007-present could be gone in a week or so, who even knows. Just pointing that out.

just because someone wins money does not mean it is not a good game. also, when gus plays he makes a lot of people do uncharacteristic things and get out of their comfort level and some of the nosebleed pros feel like this is a good thing.
