I know next to nothing about the horse racing industry but I always had the impression that the industry was shady. The parallels to MMA seem relevant.

The industry likely needs a bunch of rich people to bailout the industry by buying an effective monopoly and then work hard to clean it up. By controlling the biggest tracks and letting the public know that betters are getting a fair shake then it stands to reason that more betters would lay money down. Banning/Suspending horses whom test dirty for PEDs would force owners to do the right thing and would swiftly remove the bad trainers from the industry.

Hard to fix a horse race, but I am sure that goes on. But nothing close to the most fixed sport on the planet, Soccer.

Maybe; but consider Tennis, it's one guy on a side.

Alfred E. Neuman would be a suitable replacement for DNegs as spokesperson for Stars.

You will not find another sport out there where more money was made on fixing the sport then Soccer.

Can you elaborate more? I guess I've never really heard much about fixing in Soccer.

I honestly don't know anything about the betting industry. As far as i understand racing i only understand it from an equestrian point of view. I am not interested in gambling. I don't know how anyone with zero knowledge of a sport (I.E horse riding ok horse riding very fast!) could think to predict it.Most people who bet on football etc would have played it a little and watched it as a hobby etc for years before placing a bet. Maybe they don't think about that. But how many people who place bets on horses know how to ride them or care them even a little? Maybe it just SEEMS like that from the outside because the average better doesn't ride horses but has probably played football.

The monopoly thing ...from the trainers stables point of view .....having lots of horses is cheaper than having a few ...weird i know....that is why a top trainer is going to have lots of horses/winners. Is that what you mean? It would make zero financial sense to do with (either owning or training) just one horse. Not sure if that's what you mean. It's the same in lots of the equestrian world. 8 horses is not that much more work than 3. In fact things get easier. But on the other hand i suppose you are right. From the outside it can seem not fair. I understand that. Maybe there is a way to meet in the middle. I take your fair point. But it is true what I said. And you do need money for horses.

Banning the horse is not fair tho. It would be difficult to sell on to someone else then it it came to it. If the horse was banned it would work out worse for the horse. And a trainer can do nothing with a horse if it's banned. They might just get rid of it. That wouldn't be good. Who would you sell a banned horse to? It isn't the horse's fault.

The owners/ trainers and jockeys are banned when a horse tests dirty.

The Jockeys also have to do their own tests.

I think just because a few people do things badly doesn't speak for everyone.

I have been taken out on hacks by an ex jockey and more than a few retired jockeys were working at the stables I have ridden in they always seemed decent to me. They are people with expert knowledge. And the racing stables always hire the best farriers the best vets etc.

It's not perfect. But it is changing.

I don't want to stop people criticizing the industry. But from a point of understanding. There is a lot of misunderstanding, from people who don't ride ...for example crop bans etc i don't get people's issues with the crop at all..i would ride with one a lot..heck i have even used the reins sometimes when i forgot my crop! THAT MISUNDERSTANDING offends me as a horse person. But bad people in racing offend me much more. There is zero excuse for racehorses ending up in bad places. Or doping. Or a failure on behalf of the better and the industry to recognize certain rights of a horse.

We should make em sign a constitution on the rights of the Horse!

But i can see the industry is full of hard working people who are experts at what they do Its a pity the rest of the horse world isn't.

Owners and Jockeys do not get banned when a horse tests positive for a banned substance. The trainer does. So they just switch the name to someone other than the guy who was the trainer, and life goes on.

If the horse got banned, a trainer who drugged a horse would have a real hard time getting owners to send him horses again in the future, so that has some merit. From an owner's perspective, drugging his horse to help it win is a good thing, from a purely economic standpoint. When the trainer gets banned, move on to another name.

Some of the top trainers have many horses running every day in several time zones. I'm not sure if Bob Baffert, for example has even been in the same place with many of the horses he "trains".

What exactly is DN contributing to the poker world these days that justifies him having fans?

He used to be a poker player, now he just bitches about other people and gossips about his latest girlfriends, before the inevitable break ups once they see what a self centred void he really is.
