If there has one thing that has become evident with the liberal experiment of third world nation building, is that when you have "democracy" without any liberal norms to go with it, this should be expected.
Notice Kuwait just suspended their Parliament, and threw at least one member in jail, and there wasn't a single murmur about it from the liberal world. At this point we just accept that given the social and political norms of this part of the world (with the exception of Israel), the best you can hope for is a theocratic dictatorship where at least the dictator cares about having a functional state. And any democracy thrown in will probably yield much worse results.
