London might be a good city, but for an American, it would be an atrocious choice. Its unbelievably expensive, and we still have to pay US taxes.

Its nowhere near as expensive as you think if you know what you are doing. Its no more expensive than any other major city in england south of Birmingham in my experience. I didn't know you would still have to pay taxes though so Il shutup.

[QUOTE=Cafe Noir;26338866]I just thought I'd take the time to point out the "Visa part".. As a US citizen, they'll let you get a credit card, but there's a catch: Your Visa credit card is actually a secured card, which means the CC's limit is only as high as your banking investments. So basically to get a $5k credit limit you need to put $5k in a CD/mutual fund. Lol?

Well I don't need a credit card of any limit. Just need a bank account and wire transfers to go thru. I'm hoping CIBC is the bank that'll do this.

interesting part of FTPDoug's new post: if players move to another country they can access their exisiting balance (item #4 on post)

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/28...5-5-a-1032702/

this won't matter much if they pay US players soon, but if it drags out, this could be significant.

But definitely would love to get in touch with other people who are definitely moving there as well so we can share info and it would be cool to have some contacts in the city. Im moving there the first part of July. PM me if you are as well and ill set something up so all of us can share info with each other and stuff
I live in Victoria, it is a beautiful city, but there is no casino with a poker room nearby. If you want to play live then moving to Vancouver or Richmond is a better choice.
Richmond is slightly cheaper then Vancouver for cost of living & has a nice casino, anywhere near No 3 road is good.

Cool. So you just drove up there and stayed in a hotel until you found a place to rent? Was it easy to find a landlord willing to rent to a gambler who will have to leave within six months?

What kind of a place did you get?

What differences have you noticed between Canada and the US?
What do you like and dislike about Vancouver? how does it compare to the city you used to live in?

And the mass exodus to Vancouver begins. Seems like you can get a decent one-bedroom place near nice areas for ~$1k/month, at least on a longer-term lease. I just made a scouting trip up there and back and now have a Canadian checking account w/debit card.

FWIW, I think it's apt to start a Vancouver thread (Travel/EDF/?) in the next month or so, should be at least several dozen active 2+2'rs moving up there this summer. I hope the sun comes out there eventually

Just a heads up - all their Mountain Dew is caffeine free. Serious bad beat imo.

It's going to be radically different for everyone and I'm sure my particular case is on the expensive side, but my wife and I are planning on dropping between 7K-10K as initial expenses for the move for rent, security deposit, furniture, pet care, immigration fees, new clothes (we've been in Korea where you can't buy clothes unless you're 5'4 and 110 pounds), new computers, etc. But, results not typical: we're planting a life/settling down, not just looking to move into a ****ty apartment and set up a grinding pad. I'm sure it could be done a lot cheaper.

However, it may be worth noting that I'm American, and she's able to sponsor me for permanent resident status (so I can live in Canada without leaving after six months or breaking the law), and the fees related to processing that came to slightly over $1,000.

If I was single, I wouldn't go near Vancouver, purely because of the cost of living. I'd pick a random small town and rent an apartment for half the price.

There arent really any random small towns in BC (that arent in the mountains) where you can do this. At least that ive found. The whole reason for Vancouver is because its the nicest place in Canada winter weather wise, and theres not a lot of realestate where that milder winter weather takes place, so theres really not much in the way of options. If youve found different or somebody knows other wise, id LOVE to hear it tho, as I dont really care if I live in a small town (I grew up in one).

If you dont give a **** about the cold and are looking for cheap, than BC is a horrible choice anyway as its the most expensive part of canada, plenty of available cheap living places in Canada, if you dont mind ****ty winters.

Also, I dont get why you would do that if you were single? Seems the opposite would be true. Living in a small town would SUCK if single, but if you are already married, then who gives a crap?

I just got to Niagara Falls, pretty much waved though by Canadian Customs (middle aged clean cut white guy in a luxury car, YMMV).

Rented a cheap room by the week while I scout around.
Going to open bank account and get cellphone tomorrow.

Of course, to each their own, etc. but most single people wanna go somewhere where there's lots of females and cool sh-t to do, etc.

Just personal preference I suppose. Most of my hobbies (reading, writing, card games) and my job (poker and writing) don't really need a big city to function. If there's a Best Buy, bookstore, and Chinese restaurant, I'm set. My wife, on the other hand, likes to get involved in yoga classes, social awareness groups, tutoring university students, etc. so she really has to be in a larger city to function.

Mainly I was thinking about ease of mobility, though. I've never been to Vancouver, but I can say it seems like a pretty sure bet - for double the price. A small town might or might not suck, but it's cheap. If you're single, you can go check out small town X for a few months, and if it sucks, you can reroll with no consequences. If you're married, it's harder to do that, since your spouse will likely have gotten set up with a job, your kids will be in school, etc.

So, if I was single I'd gamble (small town), if I was married I'd take the sure bet (Vancouver/Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal).

Aren't we looking to get a CDN bank account with a CDN address attached to it?

I just received serious interest from an aerospace company for an aerospace engineering job in Darmstadt, Germany, near Frankfurt. They are going to interview me by telephone this week, and we'll go from there. So far it seems very promising.

Anyone know what the online/live poker scene is like in Germany? How about living there generally for a U.S. ex-pat? I should have no trouble getting a work/resident status because I'd be considered a "skilled" worker.

I also posted new thread about this in the travel forum.

Just gave my temporary hotel address and told them that's what it was, as I was still looking for a place. I'll change/update it once I do get a place there.

Ah, that makes sense. Did you have to state your occupation on the account application? I am curious if stating PPP is likely to be a problem.
