Whither PLO? Whither PLO?

04-26-2011 , 08:54 PM
I recently played PLO and PLO/8 online about 8 hours a day - mostly tournaments but some cash. With online now off limits I am wanting to play (less, but some) PLO live. I much prefer pot limit games to straight limit. I was in Vegas in March and played PLO 1-2 and 2-5 at the Venetian and was told that was pretty much the only place in Vegas that spread PLO high.

I was thinking of jetting out to Vegas tomorrow to get my Omaha fix (as in Minnesota the only Omaha is a 6-12 OHL limit game at Canterbury). I called the Venetian and they told me they only get a 1-2 PLO game going 'a couple nights a week'. What is up with that? I would have thought with Stars and FT dark that people would be looking for outlets (like I am).

Any advice on where to play Omaha? Primarily interested in Vegas, but if there are consistent games elsewhere I'll consider it?

(*and for the record I am still quite surprised that after all this time PLO hasn't taken off more - NLHE so boring and mundane relatively speaking)

This will be pretty unappealing but I'm pretty sure there are still consistent PLO games running in some Oklahoma and Missouri casinos.

PLO seems to be more popular in the Midwest and Mid South.

PLO continues to suffer from what NLHE did until 2003 when several rooms came up with the idea of capping BI: It is a high variance game that can leave you broke in minutes.

PLO, as you know, plays much bigger than NLHE. A 1/2 game is more like a 2/5 NLHE game. Therefore, the universe of players even marginally BR for the game is going to be small. It plays bigger because draws are more important and pf no hand is as strong as AA in NLHE.

The paradox of PLO is that you're more likely to go bust, but there isn't the gambling satisfaction of going "all in." It is the worst of both worlds to the recreational player.

There are solutions to these issues, but as long as purists decide that they can't compromise the game, they'll continue to play around 1-2 tables at best against the same people. NLHE players had/have the same issue about BI limitations. However, there are lots more bad NLHE players today then there were back in 2002. Food for thought.

I don't know about this. I think Omaha is better for the rec player in some ways. You are right about the game playing much larger so it in that sense it is bad for recreational players long term but I don't know about how many recreational players play for the feeling of "all in". Omaha gives way more gamble to the players which a lot of players want. Also because the edges in omaha are smaller (that is you see a lot more 60/40 situations than 80/20 like you do in holdem) bad players can experince positive results more often.

Live PLO master list thread:

Not sure how current it is, but you can always bump it and ask if a game is still running regularly.

Thanks I hadn't seen that.
I really thought that with online down in US that all the Omaha junkies would be looking for outlets, but perhaps there are less junkies than I thought.

Perhaps I'm the only junkie...;-)

I might drive down to Des Moines as the other PLO M&M thread suggested they have a $5/$5 game on Thursdays. (In truth Im a better PLO tourney player by far than cash player, but PLO tourneys virtually non-existent in B&M other than WSOP and a few select WPT type events. Ive pre-registered for 3 of the WSOP PLO events..

Come on down to Indiana. Horseshoe Casino Southern Indana after the river goes down will have $2-5 PLO with a $2,500 cap on Wednesday and Fridays. Intermittent $1-2 PLO with a $500 cap.

Casino Aztar in Evansville plays PLO Monday and Wednesday and $10-20 limit O/8 Tuesday and Thursday. I don't know the blinds at Aztar.

Short version: PLO is a dumb game, especially live. You get too many cards. I can't see how it would ever get very popular.

That is what the Stud players said about Holdem, except for the part about to many cards.

I played in Vegas the last four days, and asked about PLO in all the major rooms. Only the Venetian had a PLO game going; stakes were 2/5. The other rooms that I thought might carry it were Aria and Bellagio. Aria only had interest lists with 2 people on it and Bellagio said they only spread it every 3-4 months.

Here's a suggestion that might work for you...

Come out to the Borgata during one of its tournament series. There will be a couple of PLO events. And surrounding the tournament series in general, there will be frequent cash games ranging from 1/2 to 2/5.

The Spring Open just ended, so this doesn't really help you, but the Summer Open might be good for you. And stanstrickland@theborgata.com (Dir. Poker Ops) can probably connect you with decent room rates.
