But he is not right in saying that micro rake levels have been static for a long time.
Now - I am not a very good poker player and no longer play poker. But I did used to make money playing the levels that he was talking about, at the time he was referring to.

Back in those days - if you were playing 9 handed ring games of .25/.50c or at any level really of full ting hold em on Pokerstars - you received rakeback merely from being dealt into the hand. This made playing pokerstars very profitable playing mass-tables - as one could play as tight as 8/6 in a FRNL setting and make a profit out of the rakeback. It was literally how (imo) online set-miners phenomenon became proliferate.

Now back in the day - when they changed that structure - the initial change lopped 35%-50% off of the rakeback for the players. It was changed from a dealt in model to a contributed model. Now, without, arguing the rights and wrongs of that decision (again) - the argument that was put up then was about the same that was put up now. The fish because they played more hands would benefit from the changes to the rake hence more fish would play.

Obviously - I do not use this to argue one way or the other for the optimal way for attracting recreational players. Clearly, SNE players give liquidity to the site. However, the SNE guys do - and particularly now with less fish - are the main guys competing with the site for their share of the fish money. Hence, they are a strong competitor both with the site and with all other winning players for the health of the game. And it could be argued, and I believe it is a good case, that limiting tables or removing SNE will be good for the game. But, it is not without a cost - being decreased liquidity AND obviously reputational damage by changing rules on the players.

Having said the above - the main point that I wanted to contribute is that it is not true that rakes have remained statically bad at micro levels but that they have progressively got worse through time. In fact, each VIP change in my memory has made the games harder particularly for players who are close to or winning players at micro levels. I would be very surprised if anyone bar the very best players can make their way through the ranks of the levels of stars from nickel and dime poker to 1000nl poker these days. If that is true, then I think the promise that distinguished poker from other games of chance is significantly undermined because the rake setting is the functional discriminator between a beatable skill game and a game of chance moneyhole.

Final thing - one hard thing to judge what PS is able to do - is not knowing what parts of the online poker system cross subsidises other parts of their model.

The man who pulled off (depending on your perspective) the M&A deal of the century. No other guests, just him and Joey.

Needs to be done before quiet period starts on Dec 31.

Think it would be awesome to have Gordo back on to talk about Palomar club getting shut down, what this means for him going forward, SD private games, player bank being seized, etc.

I've been traveling for the past 10 days or so, currently in Philly. I played in a Twitch cash game that was half plo/half nl with my friends AdrianFenix and (also legendary 2p2er) Moki which was a real fun time (I put a couple beats on Adrian ). I also spent this past weekend in Atlantic City doing commentary again this year with Ebony for the Bar Poker Open (east cast poker league). I really like what they do for the poker world, the direction they are going and have really enjoyed my time with them in AC and Vegas. Ebony also ended up wearing a diaper in a nightclub by the end of it this year. Will post some pics/trip reports when I get back home here.

I want to reply to a couple specific posts made in the past few days but I've seen a few of my favorite people say **** the haters I don't think many of the posts ITT are really coming from a place of hate at all, most of those guys have said they are huge fans. I have found myself agreeing with most of what they have been saying because I can understand it from there POVs. I think some people will watch the last podcast and have some different expectations for it/expect more from it overall, whereas some might watch it and say this was ****ing great, great work. I think it was a different vibe than most of the stuff I do and the kind that can cause some people to have a stronger reaction one way or the other to the content. Whereas my podcasts are usually more of a casual, engergetic vibe. I think the last one was good but I think I could have also done much better in a few different spots but I really only get better in those spots with more practice in them. Its probably similar if we were to go back to watch my first podcasts I did with guests compared to now.

Getting back on the podcast grind starting tomorrow.

I told Mason I wanted to have him back on when he released his new psychology book and he released it as of December 10th. We will be podcasting tomorrow at 5pm EST to talk all about it. He also ruffled a couple feathers on his last appearance so I look forward to talking with him more about that, as well as the recent Stars changes and more.

I also should be having on Alex Dreyfus from the GPI to talk more about the Stars changes, the PR direction they have decided to take and all things related to that. Alex has run his own poker site before (ChiliPoker) and I think he has some unique insight into the business side of running a poker site.

Also have a podcast lined up with KingDan aka Dan Smith for next Tuesday, time to be determined.

For the rest of the month I am hoping to get Darryl Fish, CeeGee/SiGee aka Chris George and my buddy Dankness who I got to see this past weekend in AC. And of course AE mother****ing Jones.

Was really interesting hearing how getting better is directly affected to tiltcontrol, as when I reflected myself over like 1 year ago think it's definitely true.

Not certainly I agree with some of A/B/C game stuff he says though.

Like talking about NLHE here, but like often you are in a spot vs reg, where your decision is like very marginal/be, might be +EV might be -EV, like lets say we are talking about flop XR bluffing as BB on certain texture. A lot of hands are going to be breakeven, so we just want to have the best bluffing candidates, and have our frequencies ~ reasonable. But we still have way too many bluffcandidates, so when you are not on the top of your game, it's really easy to start ****ing up these frequencies and usually go for a bit too bluffweighted ranges etc, and even though in vacuum it doesn't matter, but if villain gets a read on you that you are atm bluffing a bit too much in a lot of spots, he can just soulcrush you. It doesn't mean that we are making -EV decisions in vacuum.

haha love the Mason podcasts! His demeanor is just funny, and I like how he completely discredits all that fluffy BS about tilt control etc. By far the number 1 best thing you can about tilt is get better at poker. If you understand variance, always have a plan, know what you're doing why you're doing it, and confident in your chosen strategy you should never tilt. (yes easier said than done - but to Mason's point, focusing on meditating and eating etc. is not going to fix the issues in your poker game).

Joey I think Mason kinda likes you man - which is saying a lot seeing as how he doesn't seem to like a lot of things or people.

I do disagree with the idea there are not degrees of tilt - I don't think it's black and white. Some can be subtle (you make a loose call out of frustration), or there is the tilt Mason seems to refer to - ape**** monkey tilt, raise everything, shove everything. Both exist.

Also disagree that there aren't certain aspects of poker that create tilt more for one person than another. I think some tilt really is driven by the nature of the person - one person can't handle losing two pots in a row. another can't handle a suckout. another doesn't like to lose to people he feels superior to. etc.

Hope to see Mason back.

Hi Nick:

I don't disagree with what you have here and think it's probably quite accurate.

This isn't true. I actually get along quite well with lots of people. But I do have a low tolerance for incompetence as I think the interview shows.

Also, glad you enjoyed the interview.
