and GO DAWGS! Overall, good game - defense still getting shredded, but there were some signs of life there as well. The question is, will the def get it together enough by the time the SEC championship goes down...judging from yesterday, if they continue to improve they could be ok...

full-time job + GTA V make playing poker rather rare occurence for me these days . Does feel good to take a "break" though . ANyway, I was out with friends last night and a friend of me told me a story of one his collegues his "poker stories" and imo they are total BS but since I ain't very active in the live scene I thought I'd ask STTf to confirm this is BS or not .

As mentioned guy is a collegue of one of my friends. His job earns him about 1.5k euros a month and a free (good) car and health insurance blabla which is a slightly above average white collar wage for my country . This to give a profile about his job and wether it would logical for him to have this job or not... He is able to play online poker while on the job about half of the time though (his job is basicly providing IT assistance by phone/virtual access/etc) since he often is waiting for a new call. My friend didn't know the stakes, but I find it hard to believe he'd combine work with high stakes play but maybe I'm totally wrong on that one.

Anyway, he made 2 big claims which to me sound pure BS:

-He is so good that he is banned from entering all belgian casinos that provide live poker (last time I checker there were 7 or 8). I have never heard of this occuring (in any country), but maybe I'm wrong?

-When he travels to Las Vegas his face is recognised in all casinos and they offer him free stay in super expensive rooms on the condition that when there are wealthy businessmen in the casino he plays them and splits his profit with the casino. I obv know famous poker pros often get free stays in LV hotels, but I'm 100% sure he isn't famous and I have never heard about a profit split offer from the casino (and surely I hope this would be illegal?)?

Can you be so good at blackjack that you get banned? Yes. Why the hell would they care at poker?

Obv sounds like total bull****. The way to disprove this kind thing is to nod and say 'uh huh' when the friend mentions it, but when the poker liar shows up, ask a few pointed questions and his story will probably fall apart quickly. (What was the name of the hotel? Where the rooms nice? Then the name of the suite he was in. Ask if there were cool statues, how far certain things were. When did he go to vegas, how long the flight was.) Try to sound interested and drill down one more detail level each question.
09-29-2013 , 09:27 AM
story sounds legit to me.
09-29-2013 , 10:54 AM
Ask him if he bothers to merge his ranges when playing v wealthy business men then ask him for his advice about slow playing sets against non-professional players.

Or be nice and believe him! Why be upset that someone else chooses to live in their own little fantasy world?

Sweet FT Gramps, must have been nice to win that one - congrats.
09-29-2013 , 11:19 AM
When he ends up scamming you please make an OOT thread about it.

Gramps/Micro, you guys watch any football last night?
09-29-2013 , 12:23 PM
I don't think I've watched a football game since 2001. But, in so far as I care, I lived in Oregon for my formative years and if the Ducks are in contention for a national title and the Bears are not, Go Ducks!
09-29-2013 , 12:39 PM
I don't want to shatter his world, just want my friend to not believe that kind of crap. Anyway ty, I guess I wont loan him the 5k€ he asked me then! (jk)
09-29-2013 , 12:58 PM
If he's banned from poker rooms it's because he cheats. Most likely just 100% bs.
09-29-2013 , 01:03 PM
what a d-bag. he must keep his current job then because he enjoys it right? Man, i got some waterfront property in idaho for sale to
09-29-2013 , 01:08 PM
The Berkeley education and Ducks rooting interest is def the way to do it Micro.

i'm sure one of the greatest most feared poker players of all time is working a 1.5k/month IT job in belgium, i just saw phil ivey working the night shift at my local wendy's . gotta stay humble.

Fwiw Belgium is one of those good ol' european countries where we pay a ****load of taxes but get a ****load in return for it as well. 1.5k/month + company car (I know this concept is relatively unknown in 'merica as well, basicly this means you get a free car from your work you gotta return in 3 or 4 years (at which point you will get a new one), since these typically are fulloption midlevel Audi/BMW/Mercedes cars, it's actually pretty sweet.) If you'd take into account everything it would probably translates to 3.5-4.5k USD USA wage (I have no idea what happens in Canada), which is still pretty mediocre but it sounds a lot less depressing when you're not used to our tax system I think .

Obv still not enough to convince a poker baller to get a job, but I obv knew this guy wasn't a baller that made 6 figures monthly from poker, but that doesn't mean I could be sure his claims were false with my non-experience with live poker. Such systems could also exist for midstakes pros, especially since the high stakes live pros is a pretty small elite club these days.
09-29-2013 , 03:59 PM
That's pretty sweet! Definitely not like that in most places in Canada but I do have friends with work vehicles. It wasn't a bash on the $ or Belgium, just comparing being a HS baller to what he's actually doing.
09-29-2013 , 05:17 PM
unknown in 'merica?! i know heaps of people who get a company car. we probably invented the system just like everything else in the world.
go make me some waffles.

Here's my stand up show from the other night, for all to criticize

09-29-2013 , 06:34 PM
Bravo Asher! I'd like to see the "Dancer Girl" turn out to be the "Hot Chick from the subway" to bring it full circle. She could reach into her purse and (twitching), offer you a candy bar that will change your life...

Nicely done. Good luck!

My brother and my father bought waterfront houses in Idaho in the last 2 months......????

Congrats Asher. How do you feel about it? Not the act itself, more the experience.

The best feedback I got was from someone who I didn't know who said "was that really your first show? Seemed like you've done that before"

It was a great experience and I felt super comfortable. A lot of that was knowing a lot of my friends were there, but it was fun seeing people I didn't know laugh too. Also getting laughs for things I didn't think I would was cool, and balanced out the jokes I thought would get bigger laughs but didn't

I'm definitely going to keep with it, just start hitting a lot of open mics. I have a friend who produces a monthly show and he told me with some practice he'll put me as an opener one month
09-29-2013 , 08:53 PM
You looked comfortable, relaxed and focused. Perhaps holding the punch line would give you a better feel for the audience. Seems that you'd gloss over and move too quickly to the next thing before getting any feedback from the crowd.

Timing. Stay with it and have fun. The best times that I've had over the years is when I was forced to ad-lib in front of 14k basketball fans. Never felt the pressure, but I sure would nerve out in front of like 100 people that I didn't know.
