10% min 20% max in most circumstances. You were already deep too.

and he knows you'd do the same for him. I've had this situation happen and many friends have and the numbers I gave are standard, the person who is doing it is freerolling and doing you a favor anyway, something like 50% is ridiculous, I'd say your buddy owes you quite a few drinks!

Agree almost completely, 50% is wayy too much.

I'd go 25% max in a situation like that.. anything more is too much.

One possibility would be to use an equity calculator to figure your equity when he took over, then you could give him say half the difference between that number and his actual result. If it were less, you would give him nothing.
This essentially turns it into a higher buyin MTT where you are "staking" him and giving him a share of the profits.
In this particular case, where he came in 2nd, his share would be quite substantial and might be > 25% of the prize.

Also, this is not a rules violation at all online poker sites.

I've done the same thing once with a friend, who had to go to an important occasion... I got 30% I think, which was quite nice for 0$ investment (after taking over a ~top10 stack in 40 left or so)... just offer him how much you think is right, ~30-50% sounds about right to me...

Wow I can't believe anyone would give him 50%, I mean I know hes a friend but so much for no risk and only a few hours of playing. I'd give him 20% max, I'm sure any of my friends would jump at the chance of making some risk free money for sitting at a pc. Its more of an opportunity to them, although my friends are only casual micro players..

If you're playing a tournament, and your internet connection dies, that seems to be analogous to Rule 21, example #3 at http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/tournaments/rules/

You are playing in a tournament and lose power in your home due to a failure of your power station. You call a friend and he takes over until your power is returned. This is permitted.

See post #35 if no one takes over for you & your power does not come back on until the next day you blind out & get zero right?

I would honestly offer to give him everything(minus entry fee). I'm certain that 99% of my friends would decline this and offer to take less though, and then I'd probably agree to whatever they offered.

Friends are more important than money imo. I wouldn't be cheap.
Wow, let's be friends.

Seriously though, 50% seems fair in this spot. Next time offer him 25% to take over ahead of time. Without such a deal in place, you have to acknowledge that you'd have nothing without your friend and thus split the profits.

I guess all those people selling accounts used the wrong excuse then.

(not implying OP sold his account, especially as it was only a $12/180)

Time He played of total time/ Total time of tourney= money he should get....Standard IMO....If you played for 3 hours and he played for 2 and got 2nd then he gets 2/5s of the money..

I'd give him 50% but the drinks would be on him next time we went out (unless we're talking like 100 dollar prize or something)

TEKEE, stop posting we get it you would give 50%.

Subtract the entry fee for both tournaments and give that money to the OP, then divide whatever profit is left 50/50.

If the friend didn't play OP wouldn't have earned a cent in either tournament so he really saved the day. Why cheap out?

most one time staking deals are around 80-20 or 75-25...treat it as a staking deal and buy him some drinks...50% is absurd, even if it is a good friend...

here is where tekee comes in and says i put money before friends...blah blah blah...

for all the ppl saying friends are more important than money blah blah wtf do u even mean. Is the person saying he won't be your friend if you don't give him a lot of money? If so why are you his friend? If not (which I assume) than think about if you staked a guy for the last 30 ppl of all tournies, he wouldn't get close to 50%. It's not about being a good friend or w/e do what's right for both of you. It's nice of you to give him money as you had no other choice besides just blinding out. LOL assani give him everything

I'm pretty sure anybody I asked to take over for me would play it out and never complain if they didn't see a dime. At the same time I'm not the type of person who would stiff a friend like that.

Depending on how big the cash was 10-25% seems more than fair.
