The Republicans have been super screwed up lately exactly because moderates have little to no shot at nomination. Of course they'd do better in the general election.
Many people of course will paint Clinton or Obama as extreme lefties, but they are very far from the mark. Obama didn't even need to give lip service to Ralph Nader or Noam Chomsky liberals in order to get nominated. Any Republican has to at least pretend to be Ned Flanders and Howard Jarvis.

True dat. The Republicans should probably just go whole hog for the Latino/Hispanic community. Become the party of open immigration. Big business will still be happy. Combine pro-immigration with anti-abortion and you get a lot of support from religious Catholic immigrants. You will lose some people who are anti-immigration, but a lot of those people will still stick with the anti-abortion party anyway.
