Here Wil shifts the argument and sets a ridiculous standard. Whether he realises that attempting to prove that in each and every one of the infinite number of hypothetical scenarios of child behaviour that physical discipline is ineffective would be an impossible task or not we can never be sure. He doesn't have much grasp over basic logic, never mind the mild nuances of this statement.
But the main thing is that Wil's standard of "effective" is absolutely absurd and one of the many things in question.
If your kid keeps running into the street then taking a block of wood, a sledgehammer, and inflicting a good old fashioned hobbling of the kid for life would be "effective" in preventing future road incursions. But the standard isn't one of pure efficacy here. Most of us would think that hobbling is still one of the worst approaches.
