Lots of Taker-fans will be cool with him putting the top guy over, and the males 16-24 that are too cool to like a goofy white rapper that is popular with the kids will hate Cena as long as he is a face anyway.
There are few potential match ups that makes more sense than Cena-Taker at WM, and letting the top guy lose to a retiring wrestler makes zero sense. If they let Taker beat Cena at WM they may let the feud go on further, with Cena coming out on top in the end, meaning they can keep Takers streak intact as well as letting Cena come off as the strongest in the end.
This is why i dont think the match will happen. Or like you say its one match sandwiched between Cena beating Taker twice or summit like that.
I also think all Taker fans would dislike the decision regardless of who he lost to. Im not a particularly big fan of him (respect him tonnes for his efforts and sacrifices for the industry though) and id hate to see him lose.

Ive no clue how true this is. Even if he wanted to only work midcard enhancement i think he could be used much much better. Even if its as simple as having him be the face of ECW (lets face it, with crowd reactions he isnt the heel the company wants him to be) and have Christian freed up to take a top slot on Raw or SD.

I think Cena would be liked a whole load more if he had a more expansive moveset and was nerfed.
I mean in the space of less than a month he got thrown into a spotlight at the end of a gruelling last man standing, then got beat down repeatedly on Raw and he STILL beat a fresh Big Show at the following PPV in a submission match.
There is dominant, and there is superhero. It worked back in the days of Hogan but its not realistic anymore - hence he is huge with the kids but so much less so with every other demographic.
If he lost more often it means we can watch his matches not knowing the outcomes already, it means he will actually put people over better (he doesnt bury them quite like Hunter but he isnt as good as Taker at putting over young up and comers).
TBH i dont care a great deal if he is heel or face, i just think he needs to be booked slightly differently and he can keep the exact same gimmick and still be accepted more.
Also i suspect he is an excellent wrestler who would love to pull off some spectacular moves, but he just isnt willing to use his considerable power in the company to break the shackles. I mean when was the last new move any wrestler at the main event level of the company pulled off? (ignoring the obv differences in gimmick matches)
But as it stands he has the 5 moves of doom, which is usually dont in rapid succession after a 5 minute beatdown):
1, shoulder block (usually done twice)
2, poorly executed fishermans suplex
3, the side suplex thing he does which always leads into
4, the pathetic looking you cant see me to the 5 knuckle shuffle combo
5, which is followed by the FU or sometimes the STFU for the victory
He also has another spot where he takes a beat down for several minutes, somehow positions the other guy on the floor face down and then locks in the STFU. There is a variation where the other guy crawls near the ropes so he gets up, drags them back to the middle, locks it and wins.
