The funny thing is that when I thought to myself, "Did Flair and HBK ever have a good match?", it led me to wanting to find the HBK-Flair match that was briefly highlighted in the Barber Shop where he threw undrafted through a window. Yup I'm stuck in the 80s.

Here, I found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsYX6SSRiv4

I'm re-watching Austin/HBK, can someone tell me how that match didn't get 5 stars?

Wasn't Austin/HBK pretty rough? HBK was wrestling through a brutal injury and it was very apparent throughout. It's great history for being Austin's first title win, but I didn't think it was anywhere near 5 stars. That WM 14 match wasn't even the best match between the two of them...their one-on-one match at King of the Ring '97 was better.

From WrestleMania 14? Because Michaels was too hurt to put in his best.

this is true, but he fails in even that. he was a total backstage cancer for the peak of his career. granted, plenty of other people were like that, but if i'm going to take a guy like that at #2, he damn well better draw.

his in ring ability is incredible, his promos are outstanding, but if he can't draw while still being a clique-centered headache, there's no sense at all in taking him that early

Yeah there KOTR match was very good but so is the WM 14 match. The only knock on it that I can see is the finish being dirty.

They are?

To me, the "wrestling" aspect of wrestling is the only thing that HBK ever did really well. That's no small thing, especially as he's in the conversation for GOAT at that aspect, but I mean that long of a career without even one truly classic promo is pretty bad. <CENSORED FOR UNDRAFTED MENTION>

I actually specifically went searching for a theme that wouldn't have the "Wooooo"...it was added so late in his career and it's just not something that a Flair would require. Glass breaking was great for Stone Cold because it was a big announcement that he was going to come to the ring to kick some ass, but Flair was a finesse guy and I think the slow crescendo music worked for him. I didn't like them using the un-subtle "FLAIR IS COMING TO THE RING NOW" announcement.

the DX beta promos were awesome. once he found jesus and went all PG they were pretty boring, but still

DX was always culturally inferior to me, so I never took to them much.

flair or UNDRafTED woulda been my first. stone cold def isn't a bad pick by any means, and is def #1c, i just wouldn't have done it cuz it's hard with the 40th pick and 60th pick to get 2 people comparable to what his wheelhouse is to work with in programs

there are 2 other people i would have taken over HBK as well

I'm sitting around waiting to pick fwiw. I think there are two obvious picks here and I'm just gonna take which ever one is left (unless there's a strange pick by emc then I don't know what to do).

Any chance you're willing to trade down from the 5th pick to the 6th pick?

Almost none. I see a massive drop-off from my #4 to my #5 (two of my top four are still around).

Yeah there's a drop-off after the next two picks but I don't think it's too big. Especially in this type of draft.

Mainly for Pharaoh and teejay, but you can cut my window down to an hour and move on if I haven't picked in that time.

I think the HBK pick is fine, but you're going to be somewhat hamstrung because you need to pick a specific type of worker to maximize his lack of drawing power (relative to who else is available.)

Flair was #1 on my board. Such longevity, great promos, amazing worker. Obviously you can make a case for others but Flair is great because he can work in any era.

With Austin as you're #1 you kinda need to have a somewhat attitude styled promotion to get the best out of his anti-hero persona. Obviously Austin is good in any era but to get the most from him you probably have to have a certain style to the promotion.

austin is not a guy like flair or [UNDRAFTED] who you can just bury the roster with and they'll still be hugely over. austin THRIVES on back and forth wars with top flight heels that give maximum payoff when he ultimately wins. the problem with taking austin 1st is at 40 or 60, those guys aren't gonna be there and it'll be harder to build around him

HBK is pretty bad @ 2. The top 4 is pretty close, then small drop, then probably another 4 (HBK in here probably), then small drop then another 4, then flagship guys get a bit more scarce after that. You can definitely still do it, but need a good 2nd banana to really make it work. FWIW, I'm ignoring pretty much everybody pre-1970 (I'm sure there is value there, I just can't evaluate it).

Flair and undrafted. Also Flair didn't really bury the roster, he put a lot of people over.

There's a hand full of guys who should still be around that would be awesome for Austin to fued with. One in particular that would be absolutely sick if he fell that far.

lololol it just occurred to me that i reported my post with "please replace UNDRAFTED'S name with undrafted" and that the post report goes to the mods of the forum, one of whom is the guy who's on the clock

epic fail
