Taking notes at the table could be rather obvious; but in the games I play so people are texting continually; so texting at least occasionally doesn't set me apart as unusual. So I use my phone to text a direct message to my gimmick account with a hand history. E.g.:

Do you keep notes on play at your table? How do you do it in a way that minimizes attention or tapping on the tank?
or you could just use a note taking app?

Yeah, I don't understand why you would tweet your hand notes. That's like hiring a plane to sky write your shopping list over the grocery store. Why not just make a note and save/text to self/e-mail to self?

All that aside, it's probably a smart thing to make notes.

I was at a table where a lady was making little tick marks on a post-it note after some hands. Turns out she was counting the times she was dealt suited cards, separate counts for each suit: "this way I know when I'm due to flop a flush draw and I'll play the hand stronger!"

Next time you see her buy her a drink.

Been looking into this idea recently as I play in a small field game and have realised I'm on auto pilot a lot of the time and I struggle to concentrate on the game, as most players are friends so it's become social. This is fun and small stakes but I realised after a downswing I'm missing out on a lot of info - have no clue quite often on how the hands have played out, who opened, opponents tendencies with certain hands and although my inner feel is not bad this is not good. I'm really sharp if I visit Vegas or Fla. Casino's where I don't know a soul and until recently I kidded myslef this was due to playing higher stakes there, but it's not it's a lack of concentration. I need to find a way to stay chatty but also concentrate on the game more. I suspect I can do it mentally but I tell myself every game start "concentrate, concentrate" and bingo half an hour later I snap back and concentrate and a half hour of info has passed me by. It would be really weird to suddenly start taking notes........

So: I found Poker Agent an Android app. There's a free version and I d/l last night. It's early days and a bit cumbersome at first as I played with it at home, so not sure I'd use it live but it would work as a live post game analysis tool for me, with mental jogs via email, voice, tweeted notes etc and some might find it works at the table too in real time once they got used to it.

I used to carry a little book with me with pages setup to easily short hand the action of a hand, so that I could look at the hand after the fact and/or post it here.

I no longer use it because I no longer find the need to post hands here (partly because I think it's a bad idea to give play styles/tendencies or strat to pros I don't know personally, and partly because the "signal to noise" ratio of good advice vs. WTF?! makes it somewhat meaningless).

I also don't typically review away from the table. Part of the reason is that I have POKER CRUNCHER on my iphone, and if I have a question, it is invariably related to ranges or reads, and I'll do that at the table at some point after a hand like that.

As far as notes on players - I don't do this for one simple reason: If I play with a player enough that the sample size is large enough that notes would be useful, then I already have a strong enough read from memory that notes are therefore not useful. My memory is still very sharp, despite the drinking and other fear and loathing activities I may be prone to.

Also, notes on a player without a database of images of them is similarly useless...

So how does moving down in stakes aid your memory?

I hadn't thought of the distinct screen color...

The problem with email is that you typically can't continually edit a long document as you would be able to in a spreadsheet or note taking program.

So I just type the data into an email, then copy and paste the information from the session into another app.

Oh, and I just respond "I'm answering emails/doing work" ...

Not really. It is the opposite of a fish. Someone trying to improve what ever their skill level. If you take mental notes and others take physical dictated tweeted etc notes what is the difference? Each is prepared to analyse their game and try and improve. Do you honestly think you can memorise as much info as HEM? No I imagine its humanely impossible. Now live it isn't possible or perhaps desirable but anyone trying to improve isn't necessarily a fish or deserving of your condescension.

Wow. Either this is a gimmick account and you are trolling, OR you really do not know what you are talking about. Even the biggest pros like Gus Hansen and Phil Helmuth take notes. Jeeze.

If you think you are too good to take notes, then YOU DA FISH, bro.

Now, now. skipokerguy is a n00b; we should be gentle and patient, and we shouldn't jump down their throat just because they're a clueless ****ing idiot.

Like somebody said before you see like 22ish hands an hour, if you need to physically write notes down of a players actions on previous hands, you are either afraid and need to move down in stakes or simply should not play poker due to memory issues.

LOL. Trolls ITT.

I remember when I went to the doctor and he was writing down all this stuff on a piece of paper, and I was like "Why are you taking notes? I'm just one guy and you're supposed to be a doctor! Like all smart and stuff. I need to see another doctor."

I bet he was so dumb that when he was in school earning his medical degree he had to take notes on the lectures because he couldn't even remember what one guy was saying or what he was reading in a book. Can't wait till I get a chance to sit across from the table with him and win some money.
