I agree that there won’t be anything too drastic (such as total closure), although I wonder if poker might be affected similar to what happened in Melbourne. No tournaments, daily time limits (12 hours), exclusion rules (12 hours between sessions) and weekly time limits (it’s either 40 or 48 hours max per week).

Well the WSOP circuit event has now been moved to the Gold Coast so that's a pretty bad sign.

Obviously the same owner, and also currently under government review with findings due any day so not sure it's a bad sign for anything:

Star's Sydney casino licence to be suspended this week in wake of damning inquiry

The Star’s licence to operate its Sydney casino will be suspended from Friday and the group will be fined an unprecedented $100 million, the NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has announced.

- A manager will oversee the licence until it's determined whether Star can rectify its wrongdoings
- Shares in The Star Entertainment Group have now been placed in a trading halt
- An inquiry into the casino found allegations of money laundering, organised crime links and fraud

This means there will be zero change to the current day-to-day operations. Poker, table games, and slots all operate as normal through the license suspension. All the action around this will relate to governance and processes. No more hiding that sweet but dirty, dirty money they were getting.

With everything going on lately with Australian casinos, we would be better off if casinos dropped poker altogether and dedicated poker houses opened up across Australia. I think there used to be a decent one in Adelaide, not sure if it’s still running. Casinos do not do justice to poker, you need a room operator manager who is passionate about poker and the players.

Would be good. Huge rake and long waiting lists all make for a pretty crap poker experience.

Anecdotally I heard the Adelaide one closed down 4-5 years ago. Pre Covid for sure, although Covid would have killed it anyway

Poker clubs/houses would indeed be great if they could provide lower rake but also security. It boggles my mind how many private games are still running in Sydney that charge at least as much rake as Star and have basically no security measures.

By which I predominantly mean anti-cheating, but of course I do know of robberies at home games too. The latter is something that most people think about but the former is something that not nearly enough people consider - people are in general extremely naive about how much cheating is going on and how easy it is

For confidentiality, I will keep the source very vague, but I spoke to a senior manager at one of the big 4 accounting firms and he gave me a very thorough rundown of the ATO's very recent thought process regarding these types of "hobbies". Basically he says the ATO are clamping down on these types of activities. However, from the discussion we had, (he never suggested this) but I derived that there are many difficulties the ATO could face if they do start defining gambling activities as a business. I.e. if poker players form gambling syndicates they could effectively minimise their taxes to a negligible amount. However the cost of setting up something like this would be very expensive and would need a very capable legal team.

I am still trying my best to gather as much (free) information and advice before I pursue any serious action (private ruling) regarding the situation. So if anyone has any personal experiences or know of any professionals who are experienced in this area, please pm me.
bumping this. Has anyone applied for a private ruling? If so, how did you got about the process?

Hi I am a tourist planning to visit Sydney next month. I plan to play some 2/5/10. I understand there is a 10k limit that you can bring out of Australia. What are my options if I win big and have more than 10k cash with me?

Spend it. Bank it. Hide it.

I think this 10k limit has often been misunderstood. I believe it’s up to $10,000 of undeclared money. If you have more, simply declare it.

https://foreignxchange.com.au/what-l...%20%2410%2C000.

Although there is no legal limit on how much cash you can physically carry on to a plane, if you are travelling internationally you must declare with authorities any amount that exceeds $10,000.

also

This is where an international or borderless debit or credit card could come in really handy.

It’s the first I knew about it yesterday. A couple of those Melb guys were really annoying the last time they came up but not sure why/how they got banned. And Lynskey is good people IMO

There’s a cash player I know who’s been running a campaign to overturn his ban but he went 1k north in a hand where he had pocket AA so f him

so I've spoken to a few people and yep...it's high stakes guys who in the past have transferred large sums of money into/out of their Star accounts. The size of the transactions have brought them under the same umbrella as a load of non poker player $$ transfers which have been blocked/banned as paart of the money laundering
