Combine that with the bad end of variance and a really bad run of cards and you have a night like mine. I don't want to be forced to get dealt good cards or hit flops to win.
Yeah the key is to win your first hand. If you drop 3/4 buyins just leave. Plenty of nights I don't win a hand and lose 5-800. It sucks but once you get 200bbs+ its easy pickens.

Hi guys,

I am just getting back into poker after a long hiatus. I can afford to BR myself with 5K and and I'm trying to figure out which games (at the commerce) would be best for me. I'll probably play friday nights and one weekend day. Are the tournies worth it? Should I play 200NL or lower stakes? I don't mind the short stacks, but the rake does seem to be a huge factor at the low NL stakes. My goal is to grow my bank roll during the year without risking more than the initial 5K.

Thanks a lot for any feed back.

Have you had any poker success before ?
If your def a winning player I'd say just play the 600/1500 no limit

Buy in for 1k , if you double up leave (unless the games unusually sick) until you build your bankroll enough to be able to play deeper

Take advantage of the free food to cut your living expenses

If your playing below 5/10 at commerce your hourly is gonna be real small due to the rake , so just take a chance

Thanks for the reply.

I was def successful at the small stakes online and at home games in 2004-2007 time period. In casinos I have never played above 40NL and there I would say I am about break even or marginally negative. I hope that is because of the rake and not because I suck.

What kind of hourly would a decent player make at 200NL vs the 600-1500? I am not too ambitious as this is just a hobby, but I do want to make sure I am playing beatable games.

My main hesitation in jumping right to 5/10 is 1) I have never played for stakes that high and 2) if I broke my bankroll I am done for the year and need to find a new hobby.

I thought it was a side income venture, not a hobby

Jus play 2-5 then and enjoy yourself
Or maybe meet in the middle and play the 500(it's 500 right? The set buyin one.) buy in 5/10 game .... If you triple up just leave till you get a 10k roll

If you start off bad and get down to 2k just go to 2/5
1/2 is just too stupid with that rake

This plan might be better life EV even though definitely less $ EV

I guess starting lower to get some live experience and comfort ability might be smart

If you have not played higher than 40NL live there is no way you should play higher than 100NL. Online and home games are very different than casino play, not to mention players are more solid now than 2007.

My recomendation would be to start putting hours at the 100NL game to get some experience. Download an app to keep track of your hours and such. Once you feel confident in that game and prove to be a winning player then take some shots at the 200NL game. Maybe even start a thread ofyour own and update it every session.

Anything under 200nl at commerce is unbeatable. 200nl is tough to adjust to. You can't just play tight and crush.

What are the blinds at their 200NL?

The best advice I can give is to start at the $100-$300 buyin at the Bike to start. It has 2/3 blinds and is full of weak passive players. Don't even bother with the $200NL at Commerce yet, it's barely real poker and you don't have much of a roll for it anyway.

The set buyin one is $400, the other 5/10 is $500-$1500. Both are very bad choices for the OP, no need to jump into the deep end.

OP has not played anything higher than 40NL live so jumping to 200NL is not advisable. He may not be a winning player and lose it all.

So I take it the 5/10 isn't much different than the 2/5?

Reason I ask is because I've been playing at Hollywood Park. 3/5 there doesn't really seem much different than the 2/3. But I'm pretty sure the 5/10 is 300-600 and only one table usually. Seems like once I do get to that level I'd probably want to go to Commerce/Bike more often. Or maybe Hustler.

5/10 at Commerce is a world of difference from 3/5, mostly because in the 5/10 you have the option of buying in up to $1500 while the 3/5 is min/max at $200. Players are also better at 5/10 (naturally) and that game has been getting tougher in the last couple of years, but it's still a decent game.

If picking a 5/10 game, I'd still go with Commerce over Bike/Hustler unless you prefer to play uncapped and deep. Bike/Hustler are typically one table if you're lucky, Commerce has a bunch.

Not at Commerce. 5/5 goes at the Bike, but as mentioned above, game selection sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. Monday night there was one 5/5 and three 2/3 games going when I got there at 8. By 8:30, one of the 2/3 games broke...

I know there is a 5/5 game at Hustler also. After 8pm maybe 2 or three tables normally run.

Bike has up'ed their 5/5 buyin. 300-1000. So if you like 5/5 which I don't, you should play there or hustler.

Lifestyles- You don't need to worry about a bankroll or rake right now. Find the biggest game where you're better than 80% of your competition and can comfortably win 2-300bb without wanting to book early or lose 2-300bb without tilting too much (otherwise you're playing too big like most idiots). Just focus on putting in the hrs (almost always at least 6/sess on a non-working day.. schedule your sess's in entirety and play them thru) and getting better.

I don't know if there's any 100bb 1-2 games in LA (you won't be learning nearly as much in short buy-in games... they might actually ritard you; and nearest legit game is prob down in SD), but the better way to go about it would be to put 600$ on one of those online sites that still wrk. Start at 5c/10c 1 tbl. Wrk your way up to 4 tbls. Wrk your way up to 10c/25c, 25c/50c (at least 6000bb in your account before you begin to consider moving up each time). Then you can think about making money outside of your actual job.

Those training site things are prob rly good for speeding up the learning process too. 1-2 live prob not a good place for you right now bc you'd have to be willing to lose up to 800$ in a day to make the best use of your time. Unless your goal is to have fun, that's different... In that case do yourself a favor (instead of us) and find a diff hobby. You're on 2+2 though so unless you're just a total nerd I assume you legit want to make money and get better.

Yeah I actually checked out Hustler yesterday hoping they had PLO or O8 going(which they didn't). They didn't have a 5/10 running either.

When I do decide to move up(sooner hopefully rather than later) I guess I'll be playing at Commerce a lot more. For now I'll stick with HP since I'm 5 minutes away.

Seems unlikely that there would be a huge influx at this point. Whoever was gonna come there for more than a month has already done it. Many many more will move to other countries than come to LA to grind live.

Welcome back...consider this a semi-LC bump.

I finally found out what kind of dealer abuse it takes to get ejected from Commerce...swear at the Armenian dealer in Armenian. Instant ejection, no discussion. Never seen anything like it (in LA).

Just moved to LA a few weeks ago. The closest casino to me is Commerce...I'm aware it's known as poker capitol but just curious if it lives up to the hype??

Also, what limits do they offer for NLHE? I'm looking for a 1/2 1/3 maybe but can't find anything on their website.

Also, are the games pretty soft?

Thanks in advance
