here is a game that myself and apathy discovered which we played a bunch in europe this month which was well received by our friends and other players. peter may expound on its origin later

the game: 1919. Nineteen-Nineteen.

what its like: its like chinese poker, but lots sweeter

number of players: two ideally, but easily played with 3 or 4, though a second deck is needed. (decks are kept independent). when two are playing and others are sweating, it is played winner stays.

the rules: -each player is dealt 19 cards which the players group into:
-a 3 card high hand
-a 5 card 2-7 low hand
-a 5 card high hand
-a 4-card plo hand, which a board will be used with a board ran out from the deck

-this leaves 2 cards which will function as a texas holdem hand, but only in the event of an overall tie from the above four hands, including royalties. a board is then run out for these holdem hands to break the tie

the scoring: -each sub-hand is worth 1 point. so the most common results are 3-1, resulting in 2 points for the winner, or a 2-2 tie, in which case you would go to the hold-em hand to determine a winner (assuming there were no royalties to untie the points), which is also worth 1 point.

-in the event of the scoop, you win 8 points, which is awesome of course and happens at a proper frequency for the game

royalties - the royalties are worth 1 point each and are rewarded for making Quad Queens or better in the 5-card high hand, or in the PLO hand (after the board is ran).

-a Royal Flush is a double royalty, and is worth 2 points. the Steel Wheel (A-5 straight flush), is also a double royalty, and is the 2nd nuts in the game, besting all other straight flushes besides the royal.

*-if playing an 'all high' hand of 1919 (where the 2-7 middle hand is replaced with another 5 card high hand), then any Quads in the middle plays as a royalty.

royalty rebinks: royalty rebinks are always in effect in 1919. what this means is that if someone plays a royalty, say quad Kings, and someone else plays a straight flush, then the royalty has been rebinked, and the poor soul with the KKKK loses a DOUBLE royalty. this of course is awesome

in the event of someone playing a royalty and getting rebinked by a royal flush or steel wheel, that would be worth a 4 point royalty, or as we call it in kentucky a double-double

the double round
-once every 24 hours each person is granted the right to call a double round. this is declared before the hands are dealt and the hands are played normally as outlined above, though the stakes are doubled.

misc notes
-when running out the boards for the omaha and the holdem, no burn cards are used.
-the game can also be played 'all high', with the 2-7 middle hand being replaced with a 5 card high hand.
-the game was invented in the year 1919

One problem I have when reading the rules of board games, etc. is that I am sometimes not excited enough about the game.

I wish more rule books would contain phrases like, "This of course is awesome", to get me more excited about the game I'm learning how to play.

Wow, that's a crazy coincidence. My above post was meant to be a non-sequitur. I hadn't even seen Snaggle's post before making it!

that game sounds swell chud, it's no plo3flop tho!
11-02-2011 , 10:15 PM
I believe it's called, "showmaha" (shomaha?) and is actually dealt regularly at ballys

chud sounds sweet..

ok well if anyone is serious about ftp funds being so safe now, i'll look at taking 80-85% for 6 figure amounts

Just stumbled upon a geeky physics show that caught my attention when I was flipping thru the channels.. and it really blew my mind a bit. I've read a Brief History of Time and a few other of those type books and thought I had at least a small grasp on the theory of relativity and stuff.. but this really made some things more crystal clear as well as touching on new theories.. so after googling it apparently it was the world's first airing of a 4 epi series and I'm actually super excited for the next one which focuses on time.. (this one focuses on space)

Here's the kinda lame preview.. but I def recommend watching (only an hour) if you've got any interest in this stuff.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDHOLAACYv0

The newest idea was the Holographic Principle which basically states that the world as we see it is actually just a big 3d hologram of reality which actually exists in a 2d state.. like the surface of the universe.. #mindsplode

The host of that, Brian Greene, has written some popular science physics books (this series is based on one). They are really, really good; this is the sort of material where reading a well-written book is so much more valuable than wikipedia articles because the concepts are unintuitive enough to require really skillful analogizing for explanation.

First thing that came to mind when i saw who Brian Greene was: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zxmJ_MLOKw

It's going to be a 4 part series on Nova I believe.

Another really good one is Stephen Hawkings' show Into the Universe. It's a 3 part series regarding Aliens, Time Travel, and The Story of Everything. V well explained w/nice graphics.

If you haven't already watched Through the Wormhole, I'm guessing you'd enjoy it quite a bit. They've had 2 seasons so far. Worst case scenario, you get to listen to Morgan Freeman.

Lastnight I Watched 'The Dotted Line,' Morgan Spurlock's documentary on sports agents. I thought it was very well done and assume most football, basketball and baseball fan will feel the same.

- i am not good at masstabling and max i played in my life in one was 80k hands

- i need good odds. but i am brazilian and i never give up, so don't need be that high odds.

odds on this?
I'm guessing you won't get much action. CJ is doing almost exactly what you proposed but at plo50 bascially. He started with 350k VPPs and 2.5 months to go, but probably will get half the VPPs per hand that you would.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/54...p-bet-1111353/

Regardless your bet would be equally difficult because obviously the competition would be much tougher. Seems like an awful idea though. I'd bet you could make more simply grinding like you normally do at your normal games / stakes / volume. People underestimate the mental toll of SNE when you do it in a year, let alone 3 months. I guarantee you'll hate poker at the end of what you're doing, whether you make it or not.

In other news, I have decided to watch a bunch of Pixar/animated movies. So far I have watched Wall*E which was excellent and Toy Story which was pretty good too. Gonna watch TS2 and 3 as a double feature in a bit. What else? Fantastic Mr Fox (i know it's stop motion)?
11-03-2011 , 01:30 PM
The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, UP, Ratatouille are all excellent as well. The toy story trilogy is probably the best.
