My Neighbor Totoro is probably his most criticly acclaimed. I haven't seen it yet but I'm dying to. I've seen it as #1 on a list of best animated movies of all time.

I've seen My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and the new one Arrietty or similar.

You can't really go wrong. Spirited Away is the most well known I think and also the strangest.

I am a Miyazaki fiend. Spirited Away is my favorite and widely considered the best, so if you're going to see only one see that.

If you have room for one or two more I'd go with Princess Mononoke (historical fantasy epic w/ incredible visuals, unusual structure, and no clear villains) and My Neighbor Totoro (children's classic) or Porco Rosso (beautiful story of cursed WW1 flying ace who now chases pirates in Italy)

My neighbor totoro won't live up to the hype. It's just different.

I really liked Spirited Away, hated princess mononoke before but I get the feeling I'll appreciate it way more this time around.

Please watch it subbed, English dubbing is just horrendous

castle in the sky is one of his earliest ones i think and much lesser known but its my favorite by far

Thanks for the input. I will probably check out the 6:30 subtitled screening of Totoro this wednesday and proceed based on how much I like it.

Just out of curiosity how was the dubbing in Arietty, I saw that they got really great voice talent for it (poehler/arnett)

Jealous I'm not in NYC or anywhere like that, I really want to see Arietty, heard it's pretty great

Why do you believe this is reasonable?

I would assume his thought is that wealthy people have been getting wealthier at a rate higher than inflation, even though I disagree with his overall opinion.

I also really love this one. The last third of it is spectacular. Laputa is one of my favorite imaginary places to imaginarily go to.

Also Totoro is less spectacular (not in quality but in spectacle) than all his other movies I would say. Other than catbus it's all pretty calm and stuff. I do need to watch it again at some point though. Mononoke is sweet, Spirited Away is sweet but a little more abstract and crazy (also highest grossing film in Japanese history) than I think is best for someones first foray into his movies.

Ponyo and Nausicaa are also definitely worth seeing and I don't think people have mentioned.

I really wanna see one of his movies on mushrooms some day.

spirited away is incredible. tho it will prolly make you wish you were on mushrooms while you're watching it.

does anyone have any solid yakkitori or izakaya recommendations for nyc?
03-10-2012 , 02:50 PM
I have only been to a few yakitori places, but I have a hard time imagining something better than Yakitori Totto on 55th and 8th.

Yakatori totti is Amazing. Prepare to wait though without a Res. They take reservations from when they open until 7pm, and rest of night is first come first serve. Going early also has the benefits of getting the "special" yakatori before they run out. Highly recommend the chicken neck and oysters from that list. Also the totto soup.

Another good yakatori place is Tori shin on the east side. Has a Michelin star and the tasting menu is a pretty good deal. Overall I still liked yakatori totto better.

i live here and love fine dining.

i like Fernando and Le Filet a tonne, they are both pretty expensive but these are 2 of my favourites.

I love Au Cinqueme Peche although it doesn't get nearly enough press. It is a great restaurant, used to be my go to, eaten probably 30 meals there. Little cheaper than the other two and still absolutely A+ food. Great wine selection, great staff.

I would skip Europa or Toque even though Toque is considered the best restaurant in the city by many. Maybe go to Toque if you are feeling really crazy.

If you want super heavy food, Joe Beef is very trendy right now, it is basically just huge slabs of delicious food and you will probably be sick later but the food is f great. They have the 'Foie Gras Double Down' which is disgusting but gives you a good idea of their schtick. Still fine dining though.

hey did anyone watch TUF live last night and wanna draft a team for like 500 or 1k or something? the winner is the person who drafts the winner, obv
03-11-2012 , 12:13 AM
I'd probably do that. Even better we could pick fighters from each team for the next round and bet some on every fight

*still dont know the teams tho

Annisa was good but unspectacular for a meal of its kind. I'd recommend a few other fine dining/tasting menu places over it for sure.
