Ok so i started playing poker when i was 16 or 17, just with a friend who always use to beat me. I remember one night me and my friend and his girlfriend came over to my house and we went to the local pub which was on a small island in Australia and we where underage but they dont care about that lol especially cus my step dad was best friends with the manager. and i finished 1st 2nd or 3rd, i think it might have been 3rd or 2nd because i remember one of the guys who won let me choose the prizes first. I cant rememeber what the other prizes where but there was a bottle of rum there and i quickly snatch that and people in the pub where laughing by the enthusiam in which i grabbed the bottle lol.

When i was 17 i moved to the mainland and was really close to brisbane CBD so i use to go around to the pubs nearly everynight and play in the freerolls. I also bought a poker game on xbox 2007 wsop and that instantly improved my game, because chris ferguson had some little lessons on there and stuff. the main thing i learnt from that was playing tighter. i remember before i watched the video i was playing hands like k2 and if i hit my king i was always getting it in lol. The regular freeroll players where the worst players ive ever seen, they are worser than 1c2c players. And there was maybe a few people who understood a little bit about the game, but thats maybe 2 or 3 out of like 30 players. And i remember being regarded as one of the best freeroll players there. i know thats not something to be proud of haha but it was good at the time cus i was only 17.

When i turned 18 i was at the poker table in the casino within 1 hour of being 18 and i remember the security gaurd saying happy birthday lol. I just remember sitting there really tight all night and eventually busted. I was still playing freerolls at pubs and was going to the casino whenever i won some of the freerolls. I got a job about 200m away from the casino as an apprentice chef and was working split shifts and had like 2 or 3 hours to waste so i use to walk up to the casino and play lol i was only on 8$ per hour but i bought some books on poker, phil gordans little green book, phil helmuths book, that book by elky and that old guy forget whats its called but i got the first book and the 2nd. raisers edge or something. and ive read the mental game of poker 1 and 2. I did recently buy that book theory of poker by david sklansky but didnt read it all and i dont have it anymore. So yea i really wanted to be a pro poker player and i remember i won like 2000$ in a week at cash games and then like 1000$ the next week. I dont know how long i was playing there maybe a few months but for some reason i was pissed off at my job and thought i could just win enough at the casino hahah i cant really remember but it didnt work out properly.

Around same time i was just starting out online poker in 1c2c i just thought that was the best thing in the world, and i won 800$ from winning a $1.35 KO finished 1st out of like 5000 players i remeber waking my girlfriend up in the middle of the night saying i won i won lol. And for some reason i use to be the tightest player at the casino i would sit there and wait for AA and KK basically lol i would play AK and QQ but fold it if there was any scary action preflop. I was so disciplined and stupid i would fold AQ sb vs bb.

Got another job washing dishes and quit it again cus i wanted to stab the chef lol This time i didnt tell my girlfriend haha and it felt like when i use to wag/skip school And maybe it lasted a week or 2 but i use to ride my bike up top of the mountain with a 6 pack of ciders and play poker lol. And then **** was getting bad with my girlfriend and then she kick me out and i was living with my mum reciving government payments. I was doing study and stuff and had alot of spare time to grind poker. I tried cash games and was playing 6 max short stack and got my roll up to like 200$ but then after two weeks of grinding i went on mad monkey tilt and jumped up one or two levels and basically busted my whole roll. I then started with 10$ i had poker tracker 4 and was playing on stars 10c 360 mans and was following bankroll manegement and got up to 50c 180 mans by late 2013.

And thats when my sister went to thailand and she told me you can live there of 10$ a day and i was so inspired and motivated and said fk yea i can make 10$ of poker that doesnt sound that hard.

So 2014 was my year, i averaged 5 hours per day. And went from like 50c 180 mans all the way up to 20$ mtts .i was just about ending my study and would have to find a job/community service but didnt think my roll was big enough to fly to thailand so i cashed my money out from stars took a shot at 1.1k tournment in local casino and bought a flash racing bike for 1.1k Just so i wasnt distracted by pokerstars and could focus on getting a job. And i was hating the idea of finding a job, esp after putting 5 hours on average per day at poker. Kinda felt like i failed

i had about 50$ left in my account so i fired up some tournments and came 2nd in the hot 22$ and won 2.5k and then two days later i won 1.3k Now i wished i hadnt taken that shot at the 1.1k cus i wanted it back, it was just like a sign that you should go to ***** thailand and play poker . I sold my bike for 800$, won about another 1k on 888 and packed my bags and now im here in cambodia and first few sessions i won 600$ in a 1$ and 1k in a 11$ turbo. Ive only been here for two weeks so im still trying to survive and see if i can actully do it, im pretty confident i can.

So yea i talk alot of shi.t in the cambodia thread and so people where complaining cus i keep talking about poker lol so thats why i made this so i can talk about whatever i want lol.

2014 results. Im a bit worried this site isnt accurate cus thats what i basing my results on.

If you ask a mod to change the title to something like "Shark, moving to Cambodia and turning pro" you'll get a lot more interest.
02-16-2015 , 09:47 PM
Ok how do i do that?

I would just write "mods, could you please change the title on this thread to xxx" and then hit the "report post" button. It's the red and white triangle underneath your post count.

Mods could you please change this to. Becoming an online poker pro in Cambodia

I want to be able to play 13-14 hour sessions, 6 days a week. And maybe even 17 hour sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Last sunday i did a 14 hour session and it was very brutal. But i only just started to grind again after a month break so im thinking i will be able to build up my tolerance level. I will be starting my session today at around 1 am and stop registering at 7am and increase it by half an hour each day. for two reasons one to build my tolerance for big sessions and to adjust my sleeping pattern. So far im falling asleep at around 9am and i want to be asleep around 6pm and sleep for 7 hours per night. I prefer to study and meditate and exercise before my session. But i will be waking up at 1am so i might wake up around 11pm and meditate and study before my session and then exercise and buy food after my session but i heard that you shouldn't exercise a few hours before you sleep because it makes it hard to fall asleep. So maybe i should save meditation for after my exercise and maybe that will help calm my mind more and make me sleepy. Anyways thats the plan. Also im not sure if 1 day per week is going to be enough breaks, in the mental game of poker 2 jared talks about mega grinding and having breaks and i think he said something like 1 week of overy month but i couldnt really understand him properly maybe i need to search google. Ive burned out once before and want to find a good balance.

Did you play sessions that long over a several-week course of time already?

I'm afraid that burns you out quite fast if you are not used to it.

Edit: Only read the short 1st post.

I cant remember how much i use to play, but i averaged 5 hours per day last year and had 1-3 months break im not exactly sure. I want to slowly build up to that point. Last year i was probably playing 7-10 hour sessions.

How many tables do you play? It is good to have lofty ambitions, yet balance in your life is priceless (and helps the grind). Don't you think that you should integrate other elements that can help you focus? Like daily long walks, exercise, a balanced social life?

Hey, so I assume you're originally from Australia? I find this thread interesting, for several reasons.

First I'm Cambodian American, born in the USA, but both my parents immigrated from Cambodia. Never got a chance to visit any distant relatives there before. I'm interested in the life there and the dynamics of being a poker player. I actually never thought about living there and playing poker before. I sadly missed the poker boom and played on "those sites" during its grim final year, and I guess some may say I'm a up-and-coming live player.

One unrelated poker question, how are you enjoying the food?

Anyway I wish you the best of luck. I'm definitely going to keep a close eye on this thread!

I use to play 20-30 tables, and i my max was 41 tables. Now i only play turbos and hypers and have joined other sites to make up for the volume. so now i have to tile the tables and its harder to play so many but i think between 10-20.

I meditate and i go for rides on my bike for exercise which is really fun because they drive so slow and can motivate you to keep up with them. And when you move to a new country to grind you most likely will be by yourself and i suck at making friends, but i have a few on skype and facebook and talk with the hotel workers a little bit. I was already anti-social before i came so im use to it. But exercise and meditation really helps with the balance i think and i try to avoid junk food. so im nearly always feeling good.

Yes i would defiantly try to move here and play if you can it feels like heaven. The cooked food is pretty good, except if you want to buy your own food its a bit hard to find like bread and peanut butter because they dont have supermarkets only like quick e marts where stuff is kinda expensive or they have markets with wierd food and the bananas arent as good over here.

And ty and yes from Australia.

Pretty much this...

I respect your ambition, but this will burn you out longterm.
IMo aim for like 50 hours work/week including all (grinding, coachings, theory, etc..) with 1 day o/week and about 1 week oF each quartal...
And then also include other hobbies and interests in your life and keep up a social life or with you, try to build some up... mb go around 1 or 2 days out/week and do some partying (not too much drinking) .... though tough with your shedule timewise...

The first hand that you double up you limp-shove in UTG+1 for 23bb. I admit the one 6bb guy who pushed was short, but something tells me you would also have called or repushed if someone would have been deep. Do you always limp pre utg?

I would fish note ppl like you... dunno how ppl like you can win any tournament at all. And Turbo MTTs are even more variance than regspeed. Your few wins in 2014 were tbh pure upswing/luck.

But good luck.. guess due to the living costs you wont go broke.

GL, in the Adventure. How is the internet? Any disconnect issues? How long have you been in the Hotel? Have your kept your profession under wraps? How old are you?

I know you referenced your age in OP, but I am a bit unsure as to the timeline of events.

Do you play cash games as well?
If so what stakes?
Good Luck
I will join you after I finish school

Shark, don't take this as a troll. I like you. But you have to realise that you come across as a bit of a ****** sometimes which tilts people and it means they give their advice in a condescending, nasty way. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad advice and these people should be dismissed as trolls and haters.
